bullet test - 08/18/2013 11:29 PM

With everyone around here shooting lions and Cape buff my pressure went up and had to hunt something to feel better and since I just bought a 6" Freedom Arms 500 Wyoming I figured a pig hunt would be perfect to test a bullet and make me feel better. This caliber can be a heavy kicker depending on the bullet weight and powder charge and Bob Baker recommends to "start out with lower velocity loads to learn how to handle the recoil of the revolver, which can be abusive". Good words to remember if your handloading for the 500WE. My load used 29.0grs of LilGun and a 350gr XTP ignited by a CCI large rifle bench rest primer for 1467FPS. Two boar came up a ridge and caught me by surprise so I hid behind a tree and since they were heading my way I waited. They walked to within 25yds and I tracked them with the iron sights until everything felt perfect. The bullet hit dead center in the lung area and exited allowing a stream of blood to pour from the entrance hole. That .50 caliber hole made this pig a bleeder. The 500WE is a large powerful cartridge capable of handling anything but the question is can you handle the 500WE? This is a great handgun and cartridge by Freedom Arms made for the handgun hunter who is experienced with and capable of handling big bore, high power handguns. By the way....my pressure was normal after this hunt.

That is one plump porker. Congratulations, good shooting James! Looks like you can definitely handle the 500 WE!

Glad you found some good medicine. Not so good for the pig. Way to go James. Wish we had year 'round targets like that up this way.

Did the xtp seem to expand well? But I guess with a 50 caliber hole, it wouldn't have to would it?

Haha. I bet it was more of an 80 caliber hole with those xtps

Did the bullet open, James? I shot a fairly large sow with my BFR in .500 JRH a number of years ago with a 350 grain Sierra at more than 1,400 fps and judging by the internal damage, it looks like it didn't expand. Curious if yours did. Nice work, James!

And a new hog hammer is born...

Congratulations James on your pig and the .500WE. I'm glad that I could "repay" you for all the $$$ that you've cost me over the years!

Can't wait to see what's next for the new iron.

Nice test subject, and nice iron, nice shooting, congrats JFJ. I used the 350 xtp in a jrh on a deer and it was bang flop but there wasn't enough animal to cause expansion but with the results who can argue.
