Super BFR Hunter

Super BFR Hunter - 12/24/2013 6:39 PM

Just had a crazy idea to turn my 45-70 BFR into a Hunter model. What do you think? Would it be practical or a waste of time and money? Thanks.

I recently saw someone turn a Ruger Maximum frame into a "Hunter" model (in .414 SperMag), and hard-chromed the frame so it looked stainless. Very nicely done!

That is a Reeder custom gun by Gary Reeder. I want one in .445 SM or .457 GNR, which is .475 Maximum necked to .458.

I should have read your post better, didnt realize you already had the 45-70 BFR.

When talking revolvers practical and 45/70 don't belong together. Now throw out the practical and substitute with words like awesome and it sounds a lot better. As for the waste of money that is for you and only you to decide. I don't see it being cheap but no good custom jobs are.

I wouldn't. Look to someone else to build a gun for you.

Wow. And I thought the scope was too far forward on the current model ;-)

Why not Gary Reeder custom Revolver? I own a David Clements custom 5 shot 45 colt based on a Ruger Bisley. Have fired Hamilton Bowen, John Linebough,
Mag-na-Port, and SSk custom revolvers.

No, it was done by Alan Harton on a Ruger Maximum frame.

I own a 45 Colt Redhawk Hunter, a 45 Colt Super Blackhawk Hunter, and a 454 Casull Super Redhawk. All have Bushnell 2-6X Elite scopes. I am always told the Super Redhawk is the superior design because the scope mounts to the frame versus the barrel.
All that being said, I believe my 45 Colt Super Blackhawk Hunter to be the most accurate revolver.

I would say follow your dreams.

Whitworth,
Any idea if there is a pic anywhere of this gun? I would like to see it.

Thanks to all for the input. I was wondering if a scope mounted that far forward would make for an awkward set up.

Any other thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thank guys.

460 Encore. I truly am jealous of the SBHH 45 Colt. I would love one, but the current sellers are mighty proud of the and price them accordingly.

Beautiful Gun, I have see one Alan Harton gun before. It was also beautiful. Gary Reeder also does conversions on Ruger Maximum> It is called Wyoming Hunter.

Just call Reeder and ask him why he doesn't line bore his guns or better yet, ask him what the twist is on the 475 African Hunter. I did and after taking a verbal beating from him I decided he won't ever be at the top of my list. He doesn't build the guns. He has 10 guys working for him. You're just buying a name and some laser etching.

Oh, after the beating he boasted that he's one of the top two custom revolver guys in the country.

No he is not. David Clements and Hamilton Bowen are definitely better. Probably John Linebough, Jack Huntington and Alan Harton.

Problem is the BFR does not have a full length barrel rib like the Hunter. Contact the custom shop at MRI and see if they can do it for you.

This might help guys, I have a request in with Magna Port to get a price on either having a a Ruger SBHH scope base or a picitinny rail with integrel front sight installed on a shortened and recrowned barrel.

I have also talked with Magnum Research, and all they were willing to do was shorten and recrown the barrel, but their pricing was a little high.

I will let you know what I find out.

I just got word from Magna Port to talk to JD Jones at SSK Industries about the project, so we will see what he says. Stay tuned.
