Laser-Cast TrueShot 360 grain bullets in a 45LC... - 03/20/2014 11:26 AM

Hi. I have a new Ruger Silverhawk 45LC revolver with 5.5 inch barrel and bisley grip frame.
I am interested in heavy hardcast LBT type bullets.
Anyone have experience with these 360 grainers?
I'd use them mostly to punch holes in grizzly bears in self defence situations.
Any chance these bullets "ride" forward under recoil? Obviously a heavy crimp is necessary.

If you know of a supply of 320-335 grainers please share where I might find them. Laser-Cast only has the 360 in LBT form.

Try Beartooth Bullets, Cast Performance, and I would recommend Montana Bullet Works, but I've heard he closed the doors due to health issues.

I like the Cast Performance 335. I save the 360's for the 454.

That's one of my favorites too.

I too like the cast performance 335's better than the 360's. I have only used the 360's in a few guns, but in all cases they shoot extremely high, compared to any moderate loads. The 335's are bad enough ;^)

Thank you all for the responces. I figure I'll check into the 335 CP bullets. 360 does seem a bit high.

Once the bullet has passed all the way through the animal, it's work is done. There is such a thing as too much of a good thing some times ;-)

Re: Laser-Cast TrueShot 360 grain bullets in a 45LC... - 03/21/2014 2:09 AM

S4s4u... Yes I agree. The main reason I looked into the 360 grainers was simply because Laser-cast has them available, with free shipping to Alaska.
I did google hardcast bullets but most don't have bullets currently available. Back ordered it seems. Some won't ship to Alaska.

Well if it's all you can get, you gotta do what you gotta do. I've never had much use for that much weight but it sure will do the job.

Re: Laser-Cast TrueShot 360 grain bullets in a 45LC... - 03/21/2014 2:47 AM

Well... I ordered 355 grainers for my 480 Ruger from Lasercast. I also ordered 45 LC brass too. Spare money for the week is depleted.
I did send an e-mail to GrizzlyCartdridge regarding Cast Performance bullets and if they ship to Alaska. Leadhead said they can ship to Alaska, so this is an alternative.

I'm familiar w/the bullets & just about every Ruger. What's a Silverhawk?

My pet name for a stainless Blackhawk. I didn't coin the word, but like it. I refer to my target grey Super Redhawk as a Greyhawk.
It adds a bit of fun to the game. Didn't mean to confuse you.

CP even gets them to our little islands so the interior should not be a problem.Where you located and are you on the AOD forum?

I was jealous enough because you live in Alaska? Thought maybe it was a distributor variation I'd not seen or heard of. I have the same gun from an earlier run @ 12 years ago? It's my favorite. Most we worry about bears here is getting into our trash.

Another source for some good hardcast bullets in Double Tap ammo. I use their 360s (.45) and their 400 grain .500 bullets.

You shoot 360s in a 45 LC? If so, please share a bit about it.
I will look up Double Tap ammo. Thanks for sharing.

I do in both my .45 Bisley and my .454 Redhawk -- in both cases I shoot Double Tap's 360 grain WFNs.

RUSTYGUNN
The Laser Cast 3555grn shoot very well from my SuperRedhawk .480 with 26.5 to 27 gr of H110. and CCI primers. They shoot true to 180+ yds on a 10 inch plate, 6 hits for 6 shots at 26.5 gr H110.
I am not a fan of them on our deer though . I shot a doe this year at 80 yds, double lung [missed the heart]and she went 150 +yds. She bled heavy after 80 yds or so.The XTP's just work better for me on deer. Should be a wicked penetrator and bone breaker though, which I take is what you need.

Thanks Junebug... I'll keep my eye open for other bullets for the 480. I ordered the 355s because they are available. Other weights will eventually be bought.

AOD... Alaska OutDoors? I don't recall if I ever posted there. Maybe in my earlier days as a newb. I joined a lot of sites back then and only attend a few now.
Nice load stuff in that link. Thanks.

Otay... I ordered the TrueShot 360 grainers. They ship free to Alaska.
I did a lot of googling for hardcadt LBT bullets but they won't ship to Alaska via USPostal Service. Others didn't have any in stock.

Load info with this weight using H-110 is needed. Anyone know of any beginner loads? Max loads?
Thanks.

The rear sight should handle the elevation.Do to cylinder lenght I think you will have to use the first crimp groove so not sure on grains of powder but probably not much more than 21gr of 296/H110

The bullets came in. I figure I'll size a brass case and make a dummy round. These only have a single crimp groove. Very nice bullets.
I'll load a few test rounds soon.

Man, I can't imagine shooting 360's in my 45 Long Colt Ruger Blackhawk Hunter. Might rip the scope off. I use 300grn Beartooth cast w/gas check and they are plenty for anything here in OK or TX. I have shot through ene to end on hogs and deer with them.
I have gone to the XTP with H110. Shoots great out to 50 yds.
Let us know how those shoot.

Junebug... Thanks for the load info. I only have H-110.
I sized the brass and belled the mouths. The wife wanted to play Scrabble so I'll continue later.

Anyhoo... I won two out of three games tonight. We enjoy Scrabble.
I did create a dummy round and it fits the cylinder nicely. It will also help to adjust the bullet seater/crimp correctly. Hopefully I'll load some tester rounds tomortow.

If you only have one powder, that's the one to have!!!
Hope the shooting goes as well as the scrabble did

I loaded six rounds with 18, 19, and 20 grains each. Eighteen rounds to shoot. I ran out of time to load more. I'll shoot these at a few targets to guage the amount of rear sight adjustment, generally speaking. I can fine tune it later.
Besides, I need to check for ugly pressure signs, too.

Re: Laser-Cast TrueShot 360 grain bullets in a 45LC... - 04/05/2014 9:43 AM

We went out to shoot the loads today. All went well. I expected recoil might be ugly. Painful. This fear resulted in a few fliers. Recoil wasn't bad at all.
I will load more with 20 grains of H110 and with 21(max load). I figure I will sight it in a bit too. 30-40 feet zero perhaps. Close, last-ditch bear buster, yup that will do it.

Hornys 300 xtp are plenty of bullet for me. Pushed with H110, they penetrate and fly just fine. They are accurate from my 10" sbh at 100 yards. Have not retrieved one from any animals yet, but dug some up out of the sand after hitting plywood targets and they mushroomed out. Penetration wanted, go with some of those hard casts from various vendors. I just don'tsee a need for anything over 300 grains.
Question, most people encounter grizz when in Alaska, but how many have had to draw and shoot one? Most guides i read about pack a shotgun or a carbine. With all the talk about packing the big hurt for all these bears, they ought to be extinct!

Allow me to explain a bit about me. I was born with an arthritis condition that left me with no movement to my head. My head is fused looking forward only. I can not shoot rifles/shotguns because I can not move my head to look down the sights.
Therefor I am using revolvers because I can hold them in front if me easily.
I will eventually buy other weights of bullets. But for today its 360 grainers.
We ' ve come across bears barely twenty feet away (sow/cub)
