Ruger free spin pawl

Ruger free spin pawl - 04/07/2014 9:02 AM

Hi. I would like to purchase a Power Custom Ruger free spin pawl in my Bisley. I take note that the one available from Midwayusa is for a pre-2005 . I'm pretty sure mine is newer than this. Is there a after-2005 free spin pawl available?
BTW I've installed three of them in my days. So I have experience. Thanks.

I found Power Custom's site and e-mailed them regarding the sizes of their free sspin pawls and the one that will fit my Bisley. I'll report what they tell me here incase others might be interested.

Seak..... I don't understand how that mod maked it a free spin pawl. This one does not have that "leg" at the bottom. This "leg" makes the pawl retract away from the star (I don't know what its called). This mod seems to only modify the teeth on the pawl tip.
Can you explain it please? I'm confused. Thanks.

I have the Power Custom Pawl in all of my Ruger wheel guns. Keep in mind depending on the gun these may require from none-some serious fitting depending on the gun. BTW if you are going to to that you might as well do the Belt Mtn base pin and Wolf springs.

My Rugers have both points the bottom turns the cylinder and the top stops the cylinder moving backwards.

Ruger only shows two pawls and they are the same look as show?

A free spin pawl retracts away from the cylinder "star" ratchet. The "leg" or "tail" at the pawl end (pivot pin end) allows this to happen. The pawl modification in the link above does not have the tail. How does it retract? This confuses me.

If you have a bullet back out under heavy recoil you can go the other way. (that is the point)

I like them because it makes the cyl. spin ultra smooth. I also find it easier to load.

See H2OBUG's post. A cylinder that free spins means it can spin in both directions. The factory pawl allows righthand rotation only. A free spin pawl retracts to allow right/left spins.
The reason, as stated by H2OBUG, is if a bullet jumps it's crimp then this cartridge "grows" too long and can jam against the barrel throat. One can easily free spin the cylinder the other way and take the offending cartridge out.
Otherwise you're shoving a knife in the cylinder gap trying to force the bullet back in.

knocking the top corner off of the pawl, does not retract the pawl like the power custom part or the ruger part on new vaqueros and the new flattop. it does take away enough of the pawl so it does not engage the ratchet when you drop the loading gate. be carefull when doing this mod, that you dont remove too much metal, or you will have a hand that will not start the cylinder to rotate. hope this helps.

Me neither, no trouble before. At least with a free spin pawl I can fix the issue pretty quick.

Well... No e-mail responce from Power Custom. Perhaps their busy. Or they hate. Anyhoo...
I did some thinking on the modifiication in the link posted by SEAK. I now undstand how it works. Its rather simple. Lets see if I can describe how it works.
The forward top of the pawl has a right and left corner. Its the right corner that is filed away. This clearance allows the cylinder ratchet to slip the other way.
If I remember correctly I should have a spare pawl after changing them out in previous Blackhawks. Time to try this mod.

First, I do have a spare pawl. Second, yes Labrat I will be careful. I don't want to ruin this one. Third, thanks everyone for the help.
