480 Ruger brass issue... fat rim? Fat groove?

Hello. When I was sizing new, unused Hornady 480 Ruger brass this evening I came across 33-34 pieces of brass that would not fit into the shellholder that came with the Lee die set (I also have another recommended shellholder but it is tighter).
I can't tell if the rims are to fat, or if the groove is too big, or whether the entire lower section is too fat. These cases fit to varying degrees... Some will not fit, some halfway and some most of the way.
Anyhoo... Any one else have this issue? Is this common? Is this just poor quality control? Bad luck?

Have not reloaded any 480's but I do have a box of Hornady factory ammo that will not fit in my FA 475. The rims are too fat for the counter sunk cylinders. (My 475 is a converted gun from Jack Hunnington, not a factory 475). I looked at the specs for the cartridges and the rims for 480 do show to be slightly thicker than 475. According to my Hornady 7th edition manual 475's have a .065 rim while the 480 has .070.

Not sure how this applies but it would seem maybe that a shell holder needs to be 480 specific?

Even Hornady .475 brass has a thicker rim than Starline.

I had the same problem with some Hornady brass, but no problems with Starline.

Thanks guys. When I ordered the dies from Midsouth Shooters Supply they said the die set needs a different shellholder that works for the 480 Ruger so I ordered it. It seems this new one is tighter than the original.
Perhaps Starline brass is more consistant/better? I 'll use this brass then order some Starline at some point. Thanks.

I had the same problem with Hornady brass and filed a touch off the groove side of the rims [thined them ] now they fit. I first tried another shellholder no help . With Starline brass no problems.

Thanks Junebug. It did cross my mind to file the rims but I can wait. I have sixty pieces to please me for now.

It only takes a few minutes and very little fileing to fix them. Saves cussing when you get one mixed in with your good brass later,at least I cussed!

I had heard that about Hornady brass so I never bought any. I bought out another shooter's inventory which had some Starline brass and they are still going strong.

Yep I have the same issue with some other cigs. I buy starline exclusively and have chunked the rest

Starline's a good brand. I haven't had an issue with Hornady brass in any caliber, though. Admittedly, I haven't reloaded the cases from either brand that many times, due to having an ample supply of both on hand.

So I'm convinced I'll buy Starline brass. I'll wear out the ones I have first. Thanks guys.
