Idaho needs help with the wolf population

Idaho needs help with the wolf population - 05/02/2014 3:34 AM

Idaho is over run with
Wolves and needs help. We have shot about 1/2 as many as we need to. An out of stater can buy a deer or elk tag and use it on wolves. Zones are generous with tags. Come one come all and help us rebuild our deer, moose, and elk population.
It is amazing how Idaho Fish and Game and the local Indian Tribes were all for reintroducing the wolf, a non-native species to Idaho, a few years ago. They received millions to track them and protect them. Sure sing a different tune now.

A**holes created this problem, NOW they see what we already knew. What does an out of state tag cost, and how many do ya get to shoot? I'd LOVE to shoot a bakers dozen of those worthless things-- the wolves, not the idiots, but only cause its illegal.

They are nothing more than an overgrown coyote/liberal to me (again, the wolves).

I once hunted bear in Idaho back in 2009. The entire trip, we didn't see any elk or horses, only one deer and a domestic sheep, and a handful of cattle, yet every day we came across wolf tracks. I'd love to go back and try my hand at it, but I don't see that happening any time soon. Good luck to those of you who are, though.

Does Idaho allow trapping? Here in Wi, about 80% of our wolf harvest was by trapping last year. The exact percentage I don't remember, but I do know trappers had higher success rates.

The regulations are on Idahos website. There is now trapping. Two wolves per year amd the tags are not too much. I have hunted them for three years and they are not easy to get. 2014 is the year.

Five tags each, that is how hard up we are. Maybe those that can, will get into some dogs.

I will stand corrected if I am wrong but I believe the administration at the time wanted to make the state of Idaho and the surrounding areas dependent on the federal government vs their own resources. Cripple the independence of the region that has been existed due to great management practices and a region where for a long time tags were over the counter.

I have nothing but disgust for those who ruined something great.

Well, my BP is high enough so back to the topic.

From what I have read in my predator hunting magazines the wolf is quite cunning and intelligent. Hunting them isn't as easy as some people think or at least thought it would be.

I'd like to see some successful stories and advice on when and where to hunt in the state of Idaho. Another question, I suspect that most ranches even if posted would allow someone to go after wolves.

Where is Ben Lilly when you need him?

I don't know Idaho's regulations. Sounds like they also need to get more trappers trained for the use of M-44s. There was a reason! good old time wolfer's eradicated them, from the region. Trapping, snaring, and M-44's is certainly going to be a far more effective. Than just issuing a pile of tags to just hunt with. The other issue is the infiltration of anti's. Into wildlife job positions, traditionally held by people who also hunted, trapped, and fished. I can remember being in school, and the amount of other students that had no interest in hunting at all. Or we're dead set against it. Didn't mean to hi-jack this post.

What ever you do you don't want the state or feds to end up doing the culling for you.
