accuracy problems with a single action

accuracy problems with a single action - 06/04/2014 12:27 AM

I mentioned in another topic about me having difficult being accurate with a single action Ruger. I have always drooled and wished for a Freedom Arms .454 but haven't been able to afford one till now. I have owned a Blackhawk in the past put couldn't hit anything with it. I am good to 100 yards with my Super Redhawk .454 and can even hit pie plate sized objects with a cheap double action .357 that I own. My question is would it be worth trying a FA and see what happens? I don't know anyone who owns one that I could try without having a my local gun shop order one and then its mine.

Why change what works? Them FAs are nice but I would hold out until I found one I could try. That's a little change to spend and it not suit you, but you could buy it and if it don't work resale it.

Good point cottonstalk I guess when I first started reading about handgun hunting the FAs have always been "the gun" to buy. I'd probably be better off spending the money burning powder in my ruger.

My experience with Rugers is there are good ones and bad ones. I have a 45 Colt Bisley that will shoot. 2.5" @100. Then I had a 41 mag that shot 2 feet left at 50 and would not shoot under 12" at 100.

Both were very nice guns great appearance but one was junk the other was a superhero.

You have to swap and trade for the superheroes when you get one keep it other wise trade it for the next candidate.

Or pay 2x for a Freedom and look no further.

With that said I challenge any FA to shoot better than my Bisley 45.

It is the only wheel gun I have ever shot under 2.5" @ 100 (6 shots) with a 2x scope.

Shocked me too when I saw the group.

Maybe I need to try a few more Ruger Blackhawks. They are more common. I just assumed it was me not getting along with the grip. I am addicted to buying new guns and a $500 or so is much easier to convenience my wife that I really had to have it.

If you like the Ruger SRH, you should try a Bisley. I find them similar in feel. I don't care for the plowhandle grip at all.

The Blackhawks and FA's are totally different animals. There is no comparing the grips. All single actions are grip sensitive to a degree, but in my hands the FA's are the easiest to shoot. From my experience, the Blackhawks are very sensitive as to how you hold them. I'm not saying they can't be mastered cause many have. As s4s4u said, try a Bisley if you can; to me, they're the next best thing to an FA.

What part of TN are you located? I've got all three that you're welcome to try if possible.

New FA from the factory are a 12 month wait.

My first thought is to rule out that you simply don't get along with the single action style guns as opposed to immediately jumping on that you have a gun that doesn't shoot worth a darn.

If you have tried the gun off of sandbags and still get crappy accuracy then maybe it is time to send it on up the road, but if off of the bags it show good accuracy but in your hands shows patterns not groups then maybe it is a grip shape or ergonomics thing.

FA should be a tack driver for sure, but if there are problems with the indian, changing the bow may not help.

I appreciate everyone's input, but I guess for now I will stick with what works. I hear from everyone that the FA's are the best and who doesn't want the best, but maybe the Super Redhawk is best for me. It is a fine firearm in its own right and I am confident that it will handle all that is asked of it. But given the chance I will fire a FA and see if it works for me. I might also try other blackhawks and SBH to see if I can hit with them.

See if you can find one with a Bisley handle. You will notice a difference.

A Bisley Hunter in 44 might need to go on the "Next gun to buy" list.

This fall we'll try to get together and let you shoot some different grip styles; if you're able.

I came across a 44 mag Bisley Hunter this past week for $700. How much do they usually cost?

There are 3 new ones at a local store all .44's, both Bisley and Blackhawk for a bit under $700.00.
I have both grip types and can't shoot either one with factory grips [beat hell out of my knuckles] Pachmayrs or Hogue grips on the Blackhawk or Eagles on the Bisley make them shootable for me.

KRal that sounds like a plan. I will have hold you to that. I rarely pass up any opportunities to fire a gun or caliber that I haven't in the past. The FA would be a treat for sure. I'd like to know before I spend that kind of money

No problem. I'll let you know when I'm able and we'll come up with a plan.

l have never fired a FA..but have SEEN them fired many times ..as they are the dominant wheelgun in IHMSA Revolver class.lts truly AMAZING to watch these guns topple those rams set at 220 yds...Built a bit different from your standard FA,they sport 10 1/2'' barrels with precision click rear sites and hooded front ones w/interchangable inserts..The Smiths and Rugers cant touch them when it comes to PURE accuracy
