Sunday cookout

Sunday cookout - 06/22/2014 9:54 PM

The boys asked me to shoot a small pig, if I run into one, for a Sunday cookout. Seeing as I could use a scoped 475 or 500 I felt it would be more sporting for the little pig if I use a 22mag. My S&W 22mag has finished more game then I can remember and but has never taken anything larger then a groundhog. It took quite awhile before I could close the distance and that first 40gr JHP stunned him in place for me to empty the J-frame. The boys had their Sunday dinner....

Ah, man, that should have been your buff gun. Would have been much more interesting.

Congrats on Finally listening to me on bullet & caliber choices! You may have still been over gunned though. In all seriousness, you made the right choice, small pig....small gun & bullet combo. It would look a little silly if your gun was the same size or bigger than your pig

A small bullet in the right place is always better than a miss with a big one. That said, congrats on the handgun kill.

This gun started life as a blue model 34 with a round grip. I bought it around 1976 and it was the third handgun I owned. I used it so much that I had it hard chromed as so much of the blue wore off. I had the mag cylinder fitted a few years after purchase. This gun has killed more game then any other firearm I own. I don`t care how thick a skull is, but when you load this with either CCI or Winchester 40gr jacketed solid bullets it will penetrate. A great revolver that I will always keep....

Read a article by "Paco" about 22mag damage. Seems they responded to a call of a man breaking into a home of a young mom and her kids. Her husband loaded up a Single Six with 40gr JHP mag`s and told her to aim for the middle and empty the gun if there was trouble. They found the bad guy hanging off the screen door and at first they thought he was hit with a 410 shotgun. He was DOA with 6 hits to the middle...
Dick Metcalf is a firm backer of the 22mag in handguns. He always said shooting a 40gr mag bullet from a six inch revolver was the same power as shooting a 22lr from a rifle... She`s a great woods gun in either 4 or 6 inch barrel.
PS one time I substituted my 22mag for a Walther PP shooting FMJ 32 ammo. Shot a big pig with a 44 and then proceeded to shoot the pig in the head with the 32 to finish. No good... It took 3 shots before one hit the brain. The 22mag is a one shot affair. [img][/img]
