Alaska bear hunt coming up. Need ammo advice. - 08/13/2014 4:30 PM

Heading to AK in Sept. for a spot and stalk black bear hunt. I'm bringing 2 handguns. My 45colt SBBH and my Glock 29 with extended Lone Wolf barrel and 15 round mag. The Colt will take hunting duties and the glock is just to be at my side ALL the time.

My question is who makes good reasonable heavy for calibur ammo? I want to go 200-220 grains for the 10mm and 330 grains or higher for the Colt.

I have looked at double tap, buffalo bore, and underwood. They all make the bullets I am after, but the prices very.

Buffalo Bore is by FAR the most expensive, followed by double tap and then underwood being the cheapest.

What would you guys go with, and who else am I missing???

I bought some heavy 45s a couple years ago, but can't remember the company. They performed well and were inexpensive.

Thanks in advance!

Not sure about exact weights but you may want to look at HSM or Grizzly. Midwayusa currently has some of there Double Tap rounds on sale.

I have been shooting a wide variety of loads in testing a 45 colt and one factory load that has been shooting particular well has been the 335 grain 45 colt +P by Double Tap, another is Grizzly's 335 WLN.

All the high end manufactures(DT,BB,Grizzly) make quality ammo its just what your gun is going to like the best. As for price you get what you pay for..

Just a suggestion: Make sure your Glock is reliable with anything heavier than 200 grains before you invest much in a purchase. They tend to be not quite as reliable in some Glock pistols as the 180/200 gr loadings.

Just so you know, Underwood is supposed to be getting their brass shipment in for 10mm this week and should have 200s available late next week. They told me yesterday that they plan to make the 200s and 180s first.

Hey guys,

Thanks for all the advice. I ended up going with Double Tap's 200 grain hardcast and 230 grain hardcast in 10mm, and for the 45 colt I went with thier 360 grain hardcast.

Thanks!

I like the 200 grain hard cast 10mm auto from Double Tap. I carried it on a moose hunt as backup. Never far from 338 Win Mag but a man has got to drink coffee around camp, answer calls to nature and go to town sooner or later before/after hunt, before plane trip home. No moose but did buy Fairbanks, AK travel mug. 45 Colt Buffalo Bore 325 grain LBT FN, 1314 fps from 5.5 inch Redhawk. Honest results compared to 1325 fps nominal. Black bear hunting with hounds, spot and stalk, stand hunting, all great fun!
