Your setup (ground or tree)

Your setup (ground or tree) - 08/15/2014 2:15 PM

Ive been hunting with a pistol on and off since they made it legal in Ohio.
Ive killed two from the ground.
I normally like to set up leaning against a tree with shooting sticks or some type of rest. Also loke a little brush in front of me to break up outline.
Whats your set up?

I can't sit still in a tree stand; therefore, I like to spot and stalk. I do the same thing that you described, but this will be my first year hunting with shooting sticks. I picked up a tripod from trigger sticks, and LOVE it. Normally, I just use a branch off the tree I'm standing behind.

My preferred method is still hunting out of a ground blind, usually placed on the edge of a clover plot. I always bring a pair of shooting sticks or a camera tripod to shoot off of. There's one tree stand I hunt out of occasionally, but due to its placement it's mostly a rifle or muzzleloader hunting spot.

Still hunting from a tree stand primarily. Spot & stalk exotics & boar.

My lease was clear cut 15 -20 years ago.... I hate sitting in a ground blind. I have some tree stands set up for bowhuntingn. I still hunt logging roads mostn of the time. Them logging roads are natural deer funnels. ..most of the lease is too thick even for the deer.

I walk. Can't stand to sit for more than a few minutes at a time. I'll work along main trails scanning the perifery and stopping for a brief period every dozen paces or so. Deer will sit tight and let you walk right by, but when you stop they get nervous and will often lift their heads to see what is up and BOOM. Other times they will just bolt and then you have to be quick, or hope that one of your buddies gets a crack at them on stand.

I've done both, I get impatient if I sit too long and when I do I usually think the place "over there" looks better. I've shot them from a treestand and while still stillhunting. I did buy an extendable shooting stick for when I sit and am anxious to try it.

Throw a climber or two in there and sounds familiar to my hunting style!

I have employed the old "turkey hunting method" as well, with mixed results when they approach from the "wrong way"...about got run over by a sounder last month.

I sit all day,I walk to my stands, hunt all day and leave when it"s dark again, I like to pick deer off far with the single shots ; and use the revolver"s for deer that are closer,

I hunt big game with a handgun the same way I hunt with my bow. Improvised brush blinds off of known travel routs, feeding/bedding areas. I carry a small bundle of 550 cord and some surplus cammo netting with me to hang up in certain areas where I feel exposed. I have hunted in the past in South Arkansas with box stands and tree stands. Its a fine way to hunt but if I want to move to another area I like the simplicity of taking down my netting (if I use it), rolling it up and going.

For small game I hunt with dogs pretty often so I'm moving constantly.
