Opening Day Report - Soft Cast Carnage

Opening Day Report - Soft Cast Carnage - 10/19/2014 12:45 AM

Opening day of firearms broke clear and cool today in eastern NC, the dawn interrupted by sounds of wood ducks leaving their roost for the safety of their daytime hides. The morning was fairly uneventful, until a nice-sized doe fed into range.

I was carrying my octagon-barreled FA in 475 Linebaugh, attempting to continue a trend of success established by its' previous owner, a member here on the site. Stoked with GlennS's favorite load of 14.5 gr of HS-6 under a soft cast 385gr HP (courtesy of Dick Thompson aka Sixshot), it shoots one ragged hole at 25 and well beyond.

After watching her feed for some time (and relatively assured that no suitors were trailing), the muffs were slid into place, hammer cocked sloooooowly, and the barely perceptible slack taken out of the trigger.

The doe crumpled at the shot, the 385 gr slug taking the doe high behind the onside shoulder and whistling through the lower spine and beyond. DRT

Soft cast @ 1150 fps is bad medicine!

Ooohhhh....I may have to try that load. Bet it's a pleasure to shoot, too. Congrats on breaking in your, new to you, FA.

That's awesome Dur! Nice shooting bud.

Kral, it's a super pleasant load and works like a charm. I used 15 grains on the bison but have backed it off to the 14.5 just to slow it down a touch.

Definitely! Cotton - that bullet would be a hammer out of your shorty .480.

I could send you some for some bruin testing - if it'll zip through Glenn's bison, I think it'd work on Carolina critters

No doubt!

HS-6 is extinct in these parts and one of my favorites for reduced recoil loads. Been playing with TG lately and it shows promise but not quite the same.
