480 ruger - 02/23/2015 6:24 PM

Well I went to a gun show Sunday. Only gun caught my eye followed me home. Ruger super redhawk 480 target . Like new looks like it has less than a box through it. I can pick it up at my ffl Tuesday. I sat in the parking lot trying to decide and called racksmasher.... and he talked me into it. Wife wasn't happy but she will get over it...besides ground is frozen she can't hide the body till spring. I am freaking excited to say the least. Now to order dies and brass.

I have the identical gun & I really like the target gray. mine wears a 30mm Ultradot. Although I have yet to kill anything with it it is hands down my favorite handgun.
You will love it!

Congrats on the new toy! I have the same gun and I topped it With a 30mm ultra dot. I'm shooting 400-412 gr cast over max charges of 296 at 1200 fps. I have used it on three pigs so far and it works great! I'm sure that you are going to enjoy it!!!

nytracker, congratulations! You'll love the 480, and as long as you're in the dog house, go ahead and buy another toy while you're at it!

Re: 480 ruger - 02/24/2015 2:15 AM

Ok ... after searching 480 ruger I see reference to sticky extraction on the older model redhawks target gray. .. is this a load issue brass issue chamber issue common in all 480 redhawks pre 2014?

Re: 480 ruger - 02/24/2015 2:27 AM

That is open for debate. The extraction issue didn't plague all of them, just some. I had a very early model I bought in 2001, that had no extraction issues. I have what I believe to be the very first one to leave the factory in the new configuration. The solution for the extraction issues is a different chamber dimension.

As long as my chambers are clean & dry no problems with mine but I don't push Max loads either.

It was my understanding that Hornady brass was the biggest problem

I am secure enough to have another man lube my bullets...

That said she is home and in my safe. .. now if it would just warm up.

I have an early 2001 model and have seen mildly sticky extraction with Hornady brass. Starline brass, even when pushing top end loads, comes right out.

I think your are correct. I also heard that Hornady brass won't fit some of the reloading shellholders, rim too large.

Sold mine some years back to help fund a 475 Lin. w/ext.480 Ruger cylinder in FA. It was a great gun, shot 2 1/4" to 3" groups @ 100yds, very accurate and no extraction problems.
Congratulations and have fun.

All of the trouble I know of was with max loads in Hornady brass. I have one of the new ones in SS and it is no problem. I have went all the way to max with it launching 370grs over 1500fps. No issues. reflex264
