480 Ruger barrel shortening?

480 Ruger barrel shortening? - 04/19/2015 4:16 PM

Bad people who write revolver books influenced me to put an Ultradot 30 on my Super Redhawk with 9 1/2 inch barrel. It makes a great stand set up but is unwealdy. Has anyone chopped their 480 Ruger to six inches or under? Velocity or handling change? Custom leather pick?

I did one for a customer. Cut to 5". He has the pics all over rugerforum.com

It changes the handling characteristics significantly. My .500 Linebaugh SRH was also equipped with an Ultradot 30 and a 5-inch barrel, and it balanced very well. Killed a couple of notable animals with that one.

Bad people, huh??
LOL!

If being informative and entertaining, leading to more big bore handguns, defines bad people, then some who post here qualify. Loved the broccoli bandits story.

I have one of the new spec 7.5" guns. Hate to cut it because it goes toe to toe with a .475 With this length barrel.

Cutting it to 5" would help in portability and handling but it will wake it up. The 500 whit had was never unmanageable but it was extremely lively.

The Whitworth definition of extremely lively. { Will leave the imprint of the front sight in your forehead if given half a chance!!!!!!!!!

Not as lively as the maximum he has but it's definitely more lively than a FA 454. There's a different kind of recoil that is perceived from those double actions vs single actions.

It wouldn't get away from you necessarily, but would deliver a blow to the web of you hand with each shot.
