Hunting revolver help - 05/18/2015 3:21 PM

I posted a thread on a tc contender vs s&w 460 and I have decided I want a revolver over the contender at this time. I currently have a ruger RedHawk in 44 mag that I shoot iron sights but I want another revolver to put a scope on for deer and hogs out to 150. What gun and caliber for some reason I think I need more than a 44 mag but still uncertain as I read an article on how a 44 and a 460 can do about the same as far as some loads go and using half the amount of powder in a 44. So I need to know what caliber yall recommend and what gun (freedom arms out of my price range) i apologize for posting so much trying to get insight I just want to make the right choice as far as caliber and gun from more experienced handgun hunters. Thanks for any help!

The Super RedHawk in 454 would be perfect for this application. Have fun deciding!

Why not try scoping your 44 first? I don't know the effective range of a 44 Magnum on medium game, but I bet you could at least push 100 yards with the right bullet.

You don't need more than a 44 out o 150, but there is nothing wrong with having more.
I have a Super Redhawk in 44 Mag. I am going to move, because I want a Redhawk in 44 Mag or 45LC.
It comes with rings and an action job.

The 44 will get to 150 but it will have a good bit of drop to account for.

The RSRH with reach right out with 9 1/2" barrel and 260/300 grain loads in 454.My 9 1/2" in 44 with 2X leupold will take deer at 150 yards but on bear I keep under 75 yards.

I like carrying this open sight gun while bow hunting and I enjoy shooting it open sight plus my gun isnt tapped to take rings which I'm sure that isn't much of a big deal. Mainly just want another gun

I'm thinking I am going to find a load for my 44 that I can shoot out to say 75 yards open sight and maybe look into a 454 I was wanting a 460 just unsure how enjoyable it would be to shoot?

I am thinking as others have said a 454 9.5" . I appreciate all the input!

At least the 454 will fit in a "normal" sized revolver ;-)

I have a Ruger SuperRed .454, 7 1/2" barrel. With the Ruger rings, it's the most versatile revolver I have. The 7 1/2" carries a little better than the 9". I've done deer out to 150+ with it. I never regretted getting it.

But it doesn't come with a wheel barrel!

I think all advise was good. I longed for a .454 for many years. When finances allowed I bought a .460. I still wanted the .454 so I purchased a super redhawk. Now I only have the Ruger. I guess I am saying you got to make yourself happy. Get the one you want

Eastex,
I would really try to test drive a 454 before deciding. Many find it harder to shoot full loads as it is quite torquey. But I also know that you will always second guess yourself if you don't try the 454. That is what you really wanted in the first place. Hope you are happy with whatever you decide on.

To add to my earlier post. I honestly rarely shoot the .454 above .44 power levels but it's available if I want it. Notice I said want not need. I don't need a .454 in TN.

The 454 is sooooo easy to download and factory ammo comes in about 4 levels at that and not including 45 colt
Loads

I know what you need,,,, Marlin guide gun,45/70. And just a little more than 1/2 price of a ruger .454. Unreal.
You can go from mild to wild with this cartridge too. Kill elephants and anything else on the planet. Yes, I have one.

Right? But, I thought this thread was about a member asking about hunting revolvers.

You can't go wrong with an X Frame in .460

However...you may look hard at a freedom arms model 83. My model 83 shoots 1.5" at 125 yards. Crazy accurate revolvers..expensive but worth it.
