Hunting caliber

Hello all, new here. Got a couple questions. I am looking for a hunting gun/caliber. I have an encore and am debating a barrel gor it in 500 s&w or a new revolver in 475 linebaugh. Thinking the encore Is the way to go as i can use the extra money on scope and ammo to practice.

What barrels do you already own for the Encore?

Hi Skippie. What is it you wanna kill with it and what barrel(s) do you currently have? You could get a barrel in 475 and scratch both itches a bit. Extra money is hard to come by, at least for me anyway. The 480 Ruger doesn't lack much to the 475 at all, so a SRH would be a fairly affordable compromise.

Also, you might consider something like a 308 or 7mm-08. They'll probably bring down your quarry just as well as the big pistol calibers, but with less recoil and less bullet drop at longer ranges.

Or, if you're dead set on a big bore caliber, might I suggest a 460 S&W barrel?

I have 7mm-08, 223 pistol barrels now but am looking for a new caliber for white tail deer. Sitting in the woods so may b e a 100 yard shot. oike the 7mm08 just looking for more weight, frontal area.

I have a .460 S&W barrel for my Encore Pistol. It's quite fun and effective on deer. I'd contemplated getting a .500 S&W barrel as well, just because. But, haven't successfully justified it in my head.......yet.

If you go Encore barrel.......the cartridge choice is pretty open.

But, I also like the recommendation above regarding the .480 Ruger in a revolver.

Either way you go, I think you will be happy. You just need to decide what will make you happy-est-er!

Another vote for the .480 SRH. With the 7.5" barrel it duplicates .475 5.5" velocity. The guns are very accurate.

Not sure what to tell you. If you already have an Encore with a 7mm-08 barrel, you may find a revolver to be a nice addition to your hunting setup.

SRH, stands for the Ruger's, Super Redhawk. It is truly a great gun, it's worth looking into.

One of Rugers gifts to handgun hunters . SUPER REDHAWK,sort of in between the .44 and .475 but a lot closer to the .475 than the .44.

PS I got one of those a while back. I haven't even tried it out yet. The target gray finish is very nice

The more i look at the 500 s&w as a caliber the more it out powers the 475.

Do you like recoil?
Or maybe, can you still shoot good with a large recoiling cartridge?
By all means get what you want......

Skippie, by you saying "it out powers the 475," I am curious as to what you plan to hunt with your handgun.

On paper, you are probably correct. But for practical hunting purposes, the .475 will work for any animal on earth, and generally can be had in a more portable package than the .500 comes in.

Unless you are talking Encore. In that case, that platform can be almost too light for either of those chamberings, at least in terms of felt recoil. Here, the answer would be a muzzle brake.

But whatever you choose, go for it, be confident, and if you have more Q's, ask here. There are some really experienced people here that can help guide you in the right direction.

500 smith and load it with longshot powder. Midrange loads that essentially just equal or beat the 500 jrh/500we and with the 500 smith ya get sucha better pick of bullets. If recoil is a problem (which it def can be on the single shots without a mizzle break) the 480 ruger makes sense. Ive found that itll easily match the 475 linebaugh velocities in a revolver when shot out of a single shot as stated above. With hornadys support of the round ive found brass is readily available
