First whitetail with a pistol

First whitetail with a pistol - 11/17/2015 7:52 PM

He walked up on me at 30 yards, the 300gr xtp did its job. I'm officially addicted to handgun hunting. What a rush!

Don't see myself using a rifle any time soon...

Thanks! Never got serious about my pistol marksmanship until this summer. What a difference some serious practice can make.

Re: First whitetail with a pistol - 11/17/2015 8:51 PM

I bought this Toklat in March. Really wanted a Freedom Arms but money wouldn't allow it. Gets the job done regardless.

It sure felt pretty awkward climbing a tree without a rifle across my back.

Re: First whitetail with a pistol - 11/17/2015 9:11 PM

Congratulations, great job.

I'm kinda envious of your Toklat, always regarded a 5" barrel as the ideal length for hunting.

Re: First whitetail with a pistol - 11/17/2015 9:24 PM

Thanks.

Thats how I've always felt as well. In the single action I've only ever had a 4-5/8".

I had a Taurus Tracker 4" in 44 mag that I loved, but it literally fell apart after three boxes of Winchester white box. Told myself it was time to go big or go home and saved to get this Ruger. I rarely shoot Casull loads, mainly just hot colts.

Re: First whitetail with a pistol - 11/17/2015 11:03 PM

Nothing like your first. I still remember mine 44 years ago. It's quite addicting. Haven't shot a rifle for 38 years.
Keep it up!!!

Re: First whitetail with a pistol - 11/17/2015 11:18 PM

Nothing wrong with that. Heck, I'll take just about whatever walks into range this season.

Grats.

Took my first deer with handgun last year. It is a great feeling of accomplishment.

Best of luck.

If you're not a trophy hunter, you need to stop handgun hunting. All critters taken with a handgun are trophys in my book.

Welcome to HH and the madness.

Good job. Nice trophy there. It's your first, so, yes it's a trophy. You'll grin every time you think about hat shot. I know I still do.

Oh yeah, we're going to either enable you, or spend your money for you, or both.

Welcome home brother.

Thanks guys. Next on the list is a new 5-shot Bisley in 454. I'd like to send it to Linebaugh and have it shortened to 4-5/8 and slicked up.

The meat is the trophy for me. There is no gun you can buy that will do the job better than the one you have. You will now move from need to want.

I'd still like to have a freedom arms one day, but I'd have to sell half my collection to get one.

Can't justify trading several guns for just 1.

I've never handled one, but are they really that good?

Re: First whitetail with a pistol - 11/19/2015 4:07 PM

Mark,

Congrats on your first deer, and kudo's for putting in the practice needed to get that deer.

FA's, like Colts or other custom guns, will not make you a better shot, nor do anything beyond what can be done with a Ruger or S&W or Taurus, etc. generally speaking. I would say more of a pride of ownership or appreciation for something other than does the gun go bang, and can I hit what I am aiming at. I own one FA gun, a few Colts, but no custom guns. I also own handguns from probably a half a dozen other makers. They (FA) are "good" guns, but only you can decide how good.

Re: First whitetail with a pistol - 11/19/2015 4:50 PM

Sure. I've shot my Father-in-law's linebaugh bisley, and I can't shoot it any better than any other revolver I own.

It sure is purdy though...

I would trade three rugers for a FA anyday, but that's just me. Rugers will do any and everything you need of them; FA's are a class of their own. Don't have to have a FA to kill game. Kinda like a Pinto and a Caddy; they'll both get you there, but.....

Re: First whitetail with a pistol - 11/19/2015 9:12 PM

I know I've always enjoyed high quality mechanical devices. Having worked in robotics I've seen some of the best machining and finishing in the world.

From what I've heard/read, FA offers the highest quality revolver you can buy with fit/finish second to none.

I think that's why I want one so bad. The extreme accuracy and durability are just bonuses.

Re: First whitetail with a pistol - 11/20/2015 2:33 PM

Mark,

big yup. My FA is an example of great craftsmanship. I like the Colts, SA and 1911, as they are the original maker. I like to think of it as appreciation for what can be done, and what was done, back in time. History and innovation.

I'm with you bearbait. Something about Original first-gen firearms warms my blood. I've got a '61 Winchester Model 12 Featherweight. Wood and bluing are ~95%. Its easily my favorite gun
