why the 41 mag - 04/03/2016 4:47 PM

Long story short .I picked up used rcbs 41 mag dies for $20 for a friend. He cant use them in his dillon press. He has a sweet blued redhawk hunter that is a shooter, , he bought new in 89. He wont part with it. I have the dies perhaps i need the gun
I have a ss 45 convertible, 44mag sbh hunter ,480 srh. Gave up on the 480 bisley, talked myself out of it as i have been waiting for local gunshop to get one in. Why is there such a following for the 41. Just trying to justfie the need for a 41 . Lookin at gun auctions theres alot of smiths and some blued blackhawks. Freedom arms are out of my price range. Just never cared for the smiths . Kind of thinking bisley hunter... but dont see them for sale. So why the 41?

I love mine. It's extremely accurate and can be loaded from mild to wild. I'll admit, there isn't much difference between it and a 44, but I've always been a fan of items that are different.

Last time I was on gunbroker, I saw a few bisley hunters in 41 on there. Can't tell you why you need one, but all I can say is you won't go wrong buying one.

Need? Need? Since when has "need" ever truly factored into an acquisition?

Re: why the 41 mag - 04/03/2016 7:36 PM

Been taking big game with a 41 maggie since 1967 & they are a great game getter. I've taken Javelina, feral hogs, antelope, white tail deer, mule deer, bear, elk, a couple of truck loads of jack rabbits, another one full of skunks, armidillos, possums, turtles, frogs, snakes, racoons, ground squirrels, rock chucks, etc. In the early days it was with 210 gr. jacketed slugs from Speer or Hornady, then 212 gr. cast slugs.

When I found a Saeco 230 gr. Keith I had finally found the right bullet for the 41 magnum, it worked on everything. Years later a 250 gr. WFN from LBT proved it was almost the equal to the 44 magnum & also had a wider meplat than the famous Keith 44 slug.

I have dozens & dozens of photo's of game taken with the 41 maggie, if you have one you are very well armed for anything in the lower 48. A good friend took his bull moose with one shot using his Redhawk 41 maggie & a 230 gr. cast slug at about 45-50 yds.

That round has always intrigued me. I have shot the 44 for ages but never the 41. Maybe I need one to shake things up a bit.

It is a sweet shooting round that packs a punch with very manageable recoil. It is in my top 3 or 4 favorite repeating handgun rounds.

A friend shot this water buffalo with his .41 Mag loaded with Buffalo Bore 265 grain loads. Worked like a charm. Good enough reason to me for the .41 Mag to be in your arsenal.

Everything I've said about the 41 magnum is true but its also true that I've taken more game with the 44 magnum & it will always be my favorite....but not by much & thats because there isn't much difference between the 2 until you go beyond 250 gr. bullets. After that the 44 rules & if you keep going the 45 rules, its simple, case capacity & bullet diameter, plus weight.

Pretty much toe to toe with the .44 mag but shoots flatter. I aint talking paper ballistics. We have actually proven it.Great cartridge. my current one is a bisley hunter. Scarce gun but worth finding.

Here's my buddy's custom Ruger .41 Mag (that he actually built) with a PacNor barrel, an oversized 6-shot cylinder, and a Huntington-modified grip frame. Very accurate.

Re: why the 41 mag - 04/10/2016 1:19 PM

Ok so went to a couple lgs yesterday. I found a rcbs shell holder for the 41 mag on the shelf ... no ordering. My good friend and one of my chief enabler starts telling me it was destiny telling me i need a 41. To wich i offer him a healthy cash offer for his mint redhawk hunter 41. He refused as expected. Looked at a brand new smith and wesson 41 . Hate the grips and the price. Easey to put down. Two states 3 counties about 100 miles later im at a shop i recall seeing a 41 blackhawk early last fall. Its still there. Used older new model bh blued 6.5 inch barrel. Leupold fixed 4 mounted on leupold rings with leupold mount. Two minor dings one on the grip frame and one on the extractor housing. Blue looks even clean no holster wear. I would say 90 percentpercent of new. Price was down 50 bucks from what i recalled. Told the guy i was interested but not that price. He comes down 50 .... i counter 100 off the sticker, and remind him it was an odd caliber and it had been on the shelf for 6 months. He agreed. I pick it up on wed as i have to wait for pistol permit office to open tuesday.

Now you can find out for yourself if your WANT was justified.Just don't use that nasty four letter word -eed ,cause with the battery you already have there was no -eed. Darn things are worse'n tater chips. If it starts with a 4 and ends with something bigger than 0 you can't go wrong.

Re: why the 41 mag - 04/10/2016 1:55 PM

Good find. I'm a fan of my 6.5 inch blackhawk. I put 50 rounds through mine this weekend and the accuracy amazes me.

I've always heard that 41's were more accurate than 44's and 45's. They say that the throats/chambers for the 41 have never strayed while something like a .45 has been 452-455. Don't know if there is any truth to that.

I've seen plenty of accurate 44 and 45 caliber guns on here.

Re: why the 41 mag - 04/10/2016 3:17 PM

Junebug i had that very conversation this weekend. With the exception of the wifes 380 , a single six convertible 22 and 22/45 hunter . All my guns are now 41 plus including my autos. My buddy the wise guy called me a whimp for stepping down to the 41 . He thinks i should put a 5 in front of my next one.

While I do Dearly Love my .45 Colts,if it goes bang, boom, or scratchfffst-boom,I like it,don't care how big the hole is. Don't ever see me with something that starts with a 5,hands won't take it anymore[so add my name to the wimp club]. Well maybe a sweet .54 flinter. That .41 should be a sweet addition to your set of hunting revolvers. Easy on the hand ,hard on hearts and lungs,Don't get no better than that.

nice find. Won't happen to me like that. I'll be the idiot that pays over the asking price for some unforeseen reason! No big deal though, after the initial sting, it fells like you always had whatever you was a wanting!

Hope you get along well with the new 41. I'll have my eyes peeled as well

Re: why the 41 mag - 04/11/2016 10:25 PM

Thadf I was looking for a bisley hunter. Couldn't pass this gun up for the price. I have been in that shop 5 or six times in 10 months. Gun has been there the whole time . Looked at in the case but was put off by the black plastic grips and blued isnt my favorite . So i guess I settled a little bit. If it doesnt shoot I will send it down the road and start the search over for a bisley hunter.
I picked up a bag of 200 starline brass and a box of 210 gr xtp tonight after work . Im currently looking at load data . Headed down to the reloading bench after supper.

Sounds like your in for a good time.:)

I'm not sure how I feel about the plow handle grip. I'll guess I'll have to get my own and find out! That's what we're supposed to do right? I mean it sounds totally logical to me. I wonder if my better half thinks so?

One gun I truly regret trading off is a 4" S&W 57. Extremely accurate and a beautiful gun. I alternated carrying it and a 6.5 inch Blackhawk 41 for many years until my lapse in judgement. My current 41 is a 7.5 inch Bisley that I'd like to get shortened to 5.5 inches.

Re: why the 41 mag - 04/30/2016 12:49 PM

Well its a pretty good shooter. Likes 19.5 gr of h110 fed mag primer topped with 210 xtp. 2 inches at 50 . Probably better when i get some range time.. got the winter rust to nock off. Trigger was real nice , I wonder if it had trigger work done on it.The gun had presentation plastic grips on it so i ordered a set of altamont wood grips for it. They look sharp fit was better than expected . Little to slim for my hands . After shooting 50 rds my hands were cramping a bit . Probably 200 rdss total for the day between 44,45,and 41. Definitely like a hunter or bisley gripframe better.

Thanks for the info guys...
