1st ever fox squirrel - also got two grays - 09/03/2016 3:25 PM
Squirrel season opened a week ago, but I woke up sick last Saturday so I didn't go. Feeling much better this weekend, I got some of my equipment together to go squirrel hunting. I saw a few early on, but they didn't stick around. After hearing one of them munching on acorns, I sneaked toward it and saw it moving toward me. I could tell it was a fox squirrel, so when it stopped I quickly took aim and fired my Ruger. One fox squirrel for me, my first one ever.
After retrieving the fox squirrel, I tried to go after another fox squirrel, but I missed it. Then, I saw a gray squirrel to my right. It jumped onto a thin limb, hanging only by its front paws. I shot him before he could hoist himself back up.
Having likely scared off most of the squirrels in the first area, I crossed a creek and moved to another area. I counted about a dozen, but only one gray squirrel stopped long enough for a shot.
My season's off to a great start.
