Supermoon buck and doe

Supermoon buck and doe - 11/17/2016 5:11 PM

GOD has blessed me with an awesome season!

I took this 11 point whitetail Monday morning at a distance of around 40 yards. I hit him behind the left shoulder. He turned and ran and a second shot (offhand) at 50 yards clipped the bottom of his spine and put him down for good. He grossed 152 points with 6 2/8 deductions for a net score of 145 6/8. He field dressed around 180 lbs.

I was using a Dan Wesson chambered in 357 Magnum shooting a 158 grain Hornady JFP traveling at 1330 fps. I purchased this revolver new in 1984 with a 6" heavy ribbed barrel. I had always wanted to scope it, but couldn't bring myself to drill and tap the barrel. Last year Gary Reeder offered several Dan Wesson barrels for sale and I grabbed a 8" ribbed barrel and installed a 2 x 6 Bushnell scope.

The initial shot entered behind the left shoulder and I recovered the bullet under the skin after traveling through the right shoulder. It weighed 147 grains.

On Wednesday morning I had two mature does come out into the field at about 100 yards. I took this one at a distance of 97 yards with an AR-15 pistol chambered in 300 Blackout using a 220 grain Sierra RN traveling at 1095 fps.

She turned and ran at the shot and expired after falling about halfway down a steep hillside. A Polaris four-wheeler with a winch (Thanks Gerald!) pulled her out with no issues.

I hit her in the front of the left shoulder and the bullet exited at the rear of the right shoulder. She left a really good blood trail.

This is the exit.

Randominator, Wow nice buck!! But, didn't you know that .357 Mag is only good enough to " give to your wife for shooting mice in the kitchen "!! I remember that statement from many years ago by an older retired gunsmith that would cross paths w/ me at a small PA Game Commission range. He & his wife were .44mag & .45Colt users for 20+ yrs. I had a DW gun just like yours. I had it D&T'd ( no rib mounts back then that we knew of)and had a Bushnell Phantom 2.5 power rail mount scope set up. Never had the chance for a deer, but took a few PA groundhogs. Wish we had 2x6 Bushnells back then. I would love to have mine set up as yours is. I have had half dozen or more of that scope on my TC barrels & revolvers. My older brother took several bucks w/ his S&W model 27 some time ago w/ plain old Hornady JHP's. Again ,nice deer & nice gear ! martrage.

Congrats. My father in law had a DW in .44 mag. Great gun, sadly it went to someone else when he passed.

Great Season! Very nice buck, and with a 357 Magnum to boot.
The bullet looked to have had about text book expansion.

Super nice buck Randominator. Central Kentucky is putting out some nice bucks to the handgunners this year. Those .357 JFPs held together much better than a .429 XTP that I shot a buck with last Saturday.

Congratulations!

Congrats! Nice to see people putting the 357 to good use! Although I have larger caliber handguns that I periodically hunt with, I just seem to always gravitate back to the 357 for deer hunting.

I didn't realize I revived a thread from 2016. In the time between then and now I could have easily read it and forgot it at least twice
