A reloading/recoil question

Going down to pick up a pound of powder to start working on heavy 44 mag loads for my 8&3/8 mod 29 with. I'll be using 320gr cast bullets.
I like Hodgon powders, so am trying to decide between H110, Lil Gun, & H4227.
I guess my question is do pressure & recoil always woirk hand-in-hand? Hodgon lists the 110 & lil gun loads at about equeal pressures with comporable velocities(max loads). 4227 has 4,000 lower cup with a loss of 90 fps.
I'm looking for a bear/moose load, so velocity is important to me, but so is shootability. Will the 4,000 less cup make a large recoil difference? I can't afford to go buy a pound of each right now.

I'd say stick with H110, but I only use 3 powders in 44mag loads - 2400, W296, and H110. If you shoot heavy loads in a 240-250gr bullet the 320's aren't that bad.

As I recall my physics, the velocity of the bullet is the key figure, the cup of the load won't affect the recoil. But the weight of the powder will.

I'm not a big H110 fan but grudgingly admit that the velocity and accuracy is unmatched with any other pistol powder I've ever used.

If you want it for hunting and need crushing terminal ballistics then H110 is your best choice.

Warning.... DON'T download H110!!! It doesn't download worth a crap and isn't safe if you download it.

Bigger bullets and more powder make more recoil. The lower CUP will just less the beating you guns and brass take from the stiffer loads. That is why Lil'Gun is getting be such a popular .22 Hornet powder...Hornet cases are thin and the lower pressure still produces the velocity of H110 without hurting the brass.

Dan - I suppose that Lil'Gun might be a good choice for the 270 Ren. Data is hard to find and Lil'Gun loads would be next to impossible. How interchangeable are the two powders ? (Lil'Gun and H110). Might be worth a try.

I've had good luck with H4227 using 300-grain bullets in my 44's in the past. One of the best loads in my guns is 20.0 of H4227 and a 300-grain Speer Uni-Core seated to the rear cannuler. This is very accurate out of a 4" S&W and penetrates completely on everything I've shot with it. Also there is no hint of preasure problems. The bad part about this bullet is there is no expantion so you really want to hit bone. Winchester 296 is my other choice for some reason I've always seemed to have preasure problems using H110. H4227 is also cleaner burning that the other two powders you mentioned but you will get higher velocities with 296 or H110.

Thanks for the replies guys. I picked up a pound of H110, so we'll see how it goes. I worded my question poorly. I understand physics enough to know tha a certain weight bullet at a certain velocity will produce a certain amount of recoil with any powder, I guess what I was getting at is how the recoil is applied to the shooter. A "kick", or a "push". I like "pushes" alot better than sharp "kicks".

Faster burning powders will produce a reduction in felt recoil when compared to slower burning powders.

The only problem with faster burning powders is that you usually can't get the velocites that most people are looking for in hunting applications.

I'm using 20gr H110 with Penn 320's with no pressure signs. I think Hodgdons listed up to 22gr with 335's or something like that. Check their website...they have a set of loads for the .44 Mag and heavy bullets. The recoil is sharp but not unbearable since the RSBH rolls up in my hand.

Vance - Here's how the H110/Lil'Gun range work turned out in a 41 Magnum I worked with last year. H110 and Lil'Gun turned in comparable velocities, accuracy, and recoil. I gave Lil'Gun the nod for a hunting load. It did everything H110 could, but used less powder to do it. I figured a few extra handloads out of a pound of powder was just a bonus.

Just something else to consider.
