New load data for old wildcats?

New load data for old wildcats? - 02/01/2017 7:12 PM

I am thinking of the .30 Herrett in particular. Most of the data I see goes back to Bob Milek's days or just after. We have been blessed with so many new bullets and powders in the last 15 or so years. Wonder if LeveRevolution has any applications for the Herrett. Also eager to try the new Hornady 135-grain FTX in .308.

My Hornady 8th edition has 30 Herrett data in its pistol section. The new 10th edition might have data for the 135 grain FTX bullet, but I doubt they'll have data for Leverevolution powder.

Wolf, I have e-mails in to Hornady and to Hodgdon on this topic, and hope they respond. I was just looking through my old Sierra 50th edition load manual and they specify pretty much the same powders as Hornady's 7th: 2400, 296/H110, 4227, 4198 et al.

Not surprising, honestly. That's what those powders were designed for. Leverevolution is probably way too slow burning to be effective in a 30 Herrett.

What Lone Wolf said x2. I have used Accurate 1680. The new CFE Black may prove to be a good fit!

By the way, Bill welcome HHM.

I see a new powder has been developed for the 300 ACC Blackout. I suspect that powder would do exceptionally well in the 30 Herrett.

Hornady e-mailed back, saying, "ask Hodgdon."
I was thinking LeveRevolution solely because it does such nice things for the .25-35 and .30-30.
Doc, thanks. Actually, I used to post here but my post history was somehow erased -- maybe when I changed passwords.

I have been working with the Herrett but used old powders with newer style bullets. In my 10" MOA, the little Barnes shoots lights out and does about 2425 or so from the 10" barrel. Deer killing machine and tiny. Love that little pistol.

Don't shoot a Herrett, but am loading 30-30 and 7-30 waters and am really liking some of the new Barnes bullets designed for the slower AR platforms in 308 and 458 calibers. I'm playing with the 7-30 now and wondering about the AR-comp powder if anyone has any experience. Quickloads suggests I will gain about 100 fps with no pressure increase over RL 7. They also say it has minimum temp sensitivity. I shot my RL7 45-70 hunting load over a chrono at 15f and found it was over 150 fps slower then summer temps. I'm going to pick some up tomorrow to play with.

Ps. Bill, have you tried the 110 and 120 gun black tipped Tac-Tx barns bullets?

Glenn, that is intriguing about the Barnes. What powders are you using? I just ordered a 12-inch barrel from MGM, so it will be a month or more before I actually have another .30 Herrett to play with.
Karl, no experience with those bullets. Sounds like I might need to get some.

Both the 110 and 120 gn black tip versions start expanding at 1350fps. They recommend 1450 minimum velocity for hunting. They are tested for 100% weight retention to 2300fps if I remember correctly.

Found those on the Barnes Web site. Boy, they look just about perfect for .30 Herrett applications against deer and antelope!
