Bear wins

Bear wins - 05/30/2017 2:36 AM

Spot and stalked a nice blackie today. It was hanging out on the beach. So I get as tight as I can to the tree line and make my way towards it. A little rock out cropping so I had to try to sneak in front of it. Mr. (or Mrs.) bear spots me and starts to run. Well my lead wasn't on and Mr./Mrs. bear lives for another day.
But.....I now know where it likes to visit. Bear crap all over the place and the ground is all torn up from it digging for bugs and such....
Stay tuned....

Thanks everyone.....

This one is a big blackie and most likely an old wise one. It knows where it is (was) safe. Close to the village.

Just a matter of time until we meet again.....

One of the locals here in Idaho shot one yesterday with his sixgun, then he got down & walked over to the bait while the bear ran off. Him & a friend started tracking it & it attacked him & worked him over pretty good, he finally got it killed but they had to life flight him out of there to the hospital in Boise. According to the paper it was quite a boxing match!

Yikes....

I have been around blackies and a lot more brownies ( I lived on Admiralty Island for almost 7 years) and I will take an encounter with a brownie over a blackie. Of course I use to spank many a brownie in the rump with rubber slugs but they are not as predatory as the blackies are when it comes to humans.

Just googled up the Statesman's article. Sounds like it was a helluva boxing match!

Guess it's true, they can never be too dead.

I guess the moral is, shoot twice just to be sure.

Good luck, Charlie! Wish I had that opportunity.

Thanks....... Been hitting the bear hunting hard. You know.... These nice long Alaskan days...Woke up this morning at 6:30 and thought I over slept...Getting skunked right now though . No sign or sightings since the last encounter. But the salmon are starting to come in so it will just be a matter of time until one shows back up.

As for the opportunity. Seek and you shall find my friend. Life is short. Where there is a desire there is a way. . My 7 cents worth I think(I lost count ).

I did seal (tag) one today that scored 19 8/16th. But it was taken a few miles away and across the water.

Re: Bear wins - 06/05/2017 7:18 AM

Well I went out this evening and no luck as to seeing a bear but I did run across a huge and I mean huge track. Brownies have not made it down this far so we are told from ADF&G. So if this is not a brownie track it is surely a huge blackie.

E mailing the pictures to Gary and see if he can post them on here. Having trouble posting them......

So Charlie , how goes the continuing saga of the bear hunt? You hang in there and watch your six and all will come out well. And if he's still moving, keep shooting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Right now it is going slow....Everything is greening up so they are having a good time munching on the greens. But....Sockeye run in in full swing so they should be making their way to the streams so hopefully the odds will be in my favor soon...
No worries about watching my six. Comes natural to a law man.

Are you hunting with your 30 30 contender?

No I am not....Try .357 Maggie with 180 hard cast.....
Most of our blackies are in the 150 pound range. They don't get to grow old around here.
But if this one bear is as big as his tracks I am going to have to go to a bigger boomer.
