Re: Handgunning WT Deer - 09/21/2017 7:31 PM

Last year gun season about 50 yards with my 357 mag contender shooting a 180 xtp about 1600. Done more load development since then this year it'll be a 180 of some sort probably an a-frame or more xtp about 1800. But I heard this fellow crunching over the hill while I was still hunting so I poked my head over the hill got a good rest off a tree he looked at me and I put one in his Adams apple.... Bullet bounced of the neck bones and stopped under the hide on the back of his neck... Doesn't sound like good penetration but he was about 300lbs on the hoof.

Re: Handgunning WT Deer - 09/21/2017 10:11 PM

Thanks. I actually shoot more does with a handgun than bucks. Not bragging but I lost count of does killed with a handgun and I still get excited when pulling the hammer back on a doe. That is one of the beauties of handgun hunting. It isn't about the size of the horns but rather the achievement of taking a animal with senses 50 times as good as ours with a means that is hard to master.

Handgun400, I hear buddy..I guess that I grew up just loving to hunt, and growing up on a dairy farm gave me a lot of opportunities to do so. I'll honestly never be able to catch the legends of the past, but that's why they're legends. Deer are the most prolific targets of opportunity and they taste pretty good too 😉😆 In all seriousness, deer hunting is the bread and butter of hunting in the Southeast

Re: Handgunning WT Deer - 09/22/2017 3:04 AM

Yes sir. I cut my teeth chasing whitetails with an old Browning humpback 5 and buckshot in south Arkansas. Back when I didn't know that you "couldn't kill deer with buckshot". I stacked them up with it until I moved up to a .30/30 and on to a Winchester 70. Nothing was better than fresh tenderloin, fried taters, biscuits and gravy at deer camp. Lordamighty that's good.

Wish I'd gotten into handgun hunting earlier but now I just make the most of it.

Quite a compliment.
I know I was impressed with his shooting last year in SC.
We did a little steel field shoot, and he did great with factory ammo and a set-up that was at a disadvantage compared to the other handguns.

Thanks David for starting this thread and sharing so many great photos of yourself and others. It is clear by their popularity, that the whitetail is America's game animal.
David, I didn't realize just how many deer you had slain. WELL DONE !
Thanks for the compliments on my marksmanship, but I can assure you there better shooters out there. What you have seen from me is a result of a WHOLE lot of practice.
That's another great point made in this thread; whitetails on the back 40 make accomplished handgun hunters.
Good luck to everyone this fall!

Matthew, you're welcome my friend, it just seemed like a good thread topic to do. With all of the "gun" deer seasons coming up, this is a good way to get excited about this year's seasons. I've killed a bunch of deer with my handguns, but not nearly as many as most. When my wife and I first were married, the only reason we had more to eat than peanut butter and Oodles and Noodles was because of my need and ability to kill deer. I'm not ashamed of it, quit differently, I'm very proud to have been able to bring home the food for the table. BTW, this year we celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary

Newt, I`am flattered that you would ask about my mule deer hunt..
I was very lucky to have taken this deer as an extreme drought had hit the state... When the time came for the shot, late in the day, this guy was 100 yds away... My FA`s model 83 in 41 mag had a Taffin handload that pushed a 210 gr. A-frame at 1647fps and there were does blocking the shot... While waiting I got complacent and of all things I shot OVER the deer... He ran straight to my right and the guide stopped him with a call at a 100 or so yds and this time I double lunged him with an A-frame that had a none stop ticket to China... he lay about 50 yds from where he was shot... Let me add that our Greg Richter has handgunned some tremendous mule deer...Thank you again for your interest........

Matthew, my friend, you've made a lifetime out of hunting deer with handguns. Your MOA is one very cool pistol. I can't wait to hopefully shoot it again one day.

Re: Handgunning WT Deer - 09/25/2017 2:06 AM

My turn! Not much to show since I'm still a relative newbie, but here goes:

First ever handgun killed deer, and my largest buck to date:

He walked out at 98 yards on opening day. A 155 grain A-Max from my 300 Win Mag Encore put him down after two steps.

One of my sister's friends unintentionally pushed this doe my way last year.

143 yards, also with my 300 Encore.

OT, but I just noticed my 30 pound weight loss between these events is quite visible in my face.

Re: Handgunning WT Deer - 09/25/2017 6:57 AM

28 years ago, and I can remember most of this hunt like yesterday. I was in a shooting box and the woods were so, so quiet when snowflakes the size of half dollars started falling. I could actually hear the flakes hit the powdered snow.. As a crow flew low through the trees I could hear the flapping of his wings... And then I made a shot on this buck that was just under 100 yards.. The snowmobile and the ride back to camp with my buck to a warm camp fire made it one of those "you had to be there moments" which I`am sure you all have experienced in one way or another.....Yea...Whitetail deer hunting is a part of America like no other....

This is my best 357 Maximum Muley. Took him with iron sights somewhere short of 100 yds just before sundown with a 180 gr. cast bullet, he was down in 3-4 seconds. This is one of about 6 with the 357 Maximum.

Re: Handgunning WT Deer - 09/26/2017 12:46 AM

I've always thought the 357 magnum was an excellent caliber for the tree stand hunter that could pick his shot & make it with great accuracy. Also I think any of the proven jacketed SP's or HP's are the best way to go in these situations. No fly's on the 357 when used properly. Now the Python James is using might be a little inferior, I would probably send that thing out here to Idaho where it would be put to better use!!!
Made my longest ever revolver kill on deer with an 6 3/8's S&W using a Sierra 140 gr. jacketed hollow cavity.

I cull for a few ranches. So, the number I can take is only limited by the number of Managed Land Deer Tags (MLD) the rancher possesses.

Otherwise, I have 5 Tags of my own.

And honestly, I mostly use a rifle to cull. It's faster and more effecient when I'm "working". But

No doubt the single shot extends the range in most cases, but wheelguns are what accompany me into the whitetail woods most of the time. Of course there are exceptions

For me that's true as of right now, but I'm working on becoming proficient with my revolvers for this season. That said, when I absolutely need some venison for my freezer or for a friend, and the late season holdouts just won't come in close, my 300 Encore will certainly get the job done right there, at any range, and with authority.

Just WOW. Looking back over this thread from the beginning I am amazed at the quality of bucks. Much impressed. Some of y'all are very blessed to be able to hunt/live in such productive areas. Doesn't hurt being dang good shots with the shortgun too.

This guy's headgear has graced my wall for over 2 decades, but it's been downhill ever since. Just a few meat bucks and does. There's always next year tho and hope springs eternal, ha.

The buck weighed over 160 lbs field dressed. He is a real monster for central PA long before the antler restriction rules of today. I got him on the last day of the 2 week firearms season at 2:30 pm. I was still hunting alone and we crossed paths. Shot him offhand at about 50 yards in thick woods.

Re: Handgunning WT Deer - 11/14/2017 4:03 AM

Here is something for you guys to read.
So the early season in SE Minnesota just ended Sunday. There were 5 of us in our hunting party and we managed to fill our tags. I managed to connect on two nice does and a nice buck with both my 45-70 and 30-30. I knocked the first doe off her feet with the 45-70 and the Barnes 300gn TTSX for the 458 SOCOM at ~ 1750fps right behind the front legs and took off the top of the heart from ~60 yards. She never regained her feet.
The buck came shortly before close of shooting time that evening. I was sitting in a ground blind watching a doe feeding in the been field that was clearly out of range given the lighting and red-dot on the 45-70 and lamenting the poor decision to leave the 30-30 back in camp. She suddenly looks up and a big racked buck bounds into view. She breaks across the field and closes the gap with him behind her. He stops at ~100 yards and starts to feed silhouetted against the trees behind him. I line up on him with the pistol on the bog pod, try to control my shakes and let fly with another 300gn copper pill. He drops at the shot but quickly regains his feet. I reload (twice) and let fly (twice) and miss him both times. All this time, his tail is down, his hips are swaying a bit and he is looking around trying to figure out who hit him trying to horn in on his doe. About this time my father lets go with a broadside slug from ~150 yards and I see smoke/debris come of the backside of the deer, high on the back.
He finally bolts toward the woods about 50 yards from where he stood. As I'm packing up (it's well after sunset, the end of hunting for the day) I hear some cracking branches where he disappeared. Strolling over, we find him ~20 feet into the woods on his back.

I hit him ~4 inches behind the rib cage on the left and exited ~4 inches in front of the last rib on the right. He was a bit of a mess in side with stomach contents and lots of blood. My father's shot hit above the spine and passed clean through the top of his back. While I like the Sig-Sauer circle-dot, it has limited range with no magnification and that range drops rapidly with low light.

The next Friday evening found me back in the field with my 30-30 and Leopold glass having learned my lesson the week before. I was watching a doe and a couple fawns feeding in the field waiting for a buck that never showed up. About 15 min after sunset with light dropping fast I decided it was time. I lined up on a young doe at ~60 yards and let fly. the 110gn black tipped TTSX left the barrel at ~2400 fps and hit the doe right behind the left leg, crossed the chest cavity and shattered the right shoulder. She jumped, spun and made it ~20 yards before piling up just inside the trees. I didn't locate an exit hole but never found the bullet. It may have ended up back in the lungs in the gut pile.

In the end, I ended up shooting 2.5 deer out of the 5 our group took. I got extremely luck and managed to be in the right place at the right time several times.
