Holster for scoped handgun

Holster for scoped handgun - 09/30/2017 3:40 PM

I've been shooting my new SRH 454 a lot lately, love it! I've never carried a scoped revolver in the field before, only iron sighted ones. Any suggestions on a shoulder holster for a 7.5" SRH with an Ultra Dot sight? I am thinking a should holster would be the best way to carry it.

I like bandoleer (spelling?) Holsters myself right now I have a size 14 Blackhawk shoulder holster that I pulled the offside belt clip and the plastic truss thing on back off of and ran the ends together through the adjusting loops... Why not just buy a regular one you ask? Well this is what my wife got me and since I modified it I love the thing also it rides more on my offside hip than in front so im not whacking it off stuff.

7x Leather makes a chest rig specifically for this application and it is fantastic!

I have a Bianchi Hush that I have had since the early 90's that I have used for a variety of handguns-Not sure they even make it anymore.
If they still have it, it has worked great for me.

I've used the Pistol Packaging bandolier and it works great if you want a shoulder rig. Reasonably priced as well.

Best one ive used is the galco kodiak hunter hands down. Works with any scope combo and also with the gun with just irons so in africa i make my initial cape buff shot with red dot then take it off and have my night sights regulated for my solids and use it that way for f/u im close then scope for waterholes and never change holsters!

What I would do.
Check out a Boyt Harness Rectangular Pistol Case, Size 16" X 10" in OD Green.

Get some 1" OD Green Webbing and add 4 D Rings to the handles close to the case body on the inside. Solid Brass ones or Stainless Steel would be nice. I sewed the last ones on by hand.
Attach a sling to the D's such as an MP5 Machine Gun sling, and carry the pistol across your chest like a muzzle loader possibles bag. The MP5 sling has snaps on the ends for attachment. You could also make up the sling from that same 1" OD Webbing and some clip ends to attach to the D's.

Just My 2 Cents.

MOST OF THE TIME ON MY AFRICAN SAFARIS I CARRIED MY SCOPED REVOLVER IN MY HAND, ONCE IN A WHILE IN ITS PISTOL RUG, NEVER IN A HOLSTER, YOU NEED TO BE READY. NOW WHEN I JUST AM CARRYING MY SCOPED HANDGUN TO A STAND, I JUST USE A PISTOL RUG. BIG HOLSTERS CAN BE BULKY, MAKE NOISE, AND SLOW YOU DOWN WHEN IT IS TIME TO SHOOT. ANALYZE WHEN, WHERE AND LENGTH OF TIME TO BE CARRIED, AND THEN DECIDE IF YOU NEED A HOLSTER FOR THAT SCOPED GUN.

P.S. WITH THE SHORTER BARRELED GUNS YOU MAY BE ABLE TO USE A BELT HOLSTER.

As per my last conversation with him. He wasn't doing scoped chest holsters, for the time being. I have a few and they are nice holsters.

Take a look around for a "Pistol Packing" chest rig? You can custom them to your gun for a very reasonable price and made of leather. Bill over at Graybeard's forum turned me onto them years back.

I apologize, I didn't see this was years old?

Be sure & check out Mike Barranti's North West Hunter shoulder holster, it's amazing! Years ago I started out with Lawrence shoulder holsters & also Idaho Leather shoulder rigs & both were very good. I also used Bianchi rigs with very good success. The only problem was they all hung under the arm & with a long barreled sixgun that can be uncomfortable & unhandy at times.
The Barranti NWH rig is adjustable & you can move it around & also carry it across in front of you so the gun is easy & fast to access. They are very comfortable to wear.

This is a muley doe I shot last month on a land owner tag in Utah. Also took a doe antelope wearing the same chest rig.

I was looking at the Barranti web page. They have a chest strap that is optional for the Northwest Hunter model. Would you recommend this? This revolver will get quite a bit of use on horseback. The Barranti's seem to be very well made. Also I've run into some folks who recommend linings and some who do not. Any opinions?

I like the holster lined but have some belt holsters that are not. Also I use the optional strap quite a bit, especially if I'm riding a horse or mule, that way the holster is tight to the body & not slamming you in the ribs from time to time.
If I'm just walking or sitting sometimes I don't use it. You can see in the photo's the holster can be raised or lowered, pulled in front or moved under the arm if needed, it's very versatile.

Blackhawk Pistol Bandoleer for large scoped revolvers Its been shipped but I don't have it yet. Its synthetic. I wanted leather but didn't want to spend $200. This thread has some other options I didn't find on my own.

I learn a lot from this forum but not always before I make mistakes.

Spinsail,

I have that exact holster for my Super BlackHawk Hunter and I love it. Fits well, nice construction, flap or retention strap to secure the gun ... I'd buy another.

I use a nylon bandolier holster from Cabela's. Great quality, but they've quit making them.

Thanks PsTaN, now I am looking forward to getting it.

Mike Barranti's northwest hunter is awesome. Rob Leahy's (simply rugged holsters) chesty puller system is awesome as well.

The Bianchi Bandoleer holster arrived today and it is much sturdier construction than I guessed and the fit is fine. I am going to like it.
