Ruger SRH Toklat

Ruger SRH Toklat - 01/20/2018 1:58 AM

Looking for responses from anyone who has experience with the 5 inch Toklat 454 Casull. I am hunting with one and wonder about the accuracy. Mine is sighted in at 25 yds and seems to be ok with Federal 250 grain Barnes loads. My deer shots have all been less than 25 yds but I have not had an opportunity yet with this gun. Thanks

I have one and took a deer with it last season at 35ish yards using handloaded 250gr Hornady XTP bullets.

Worked like a champ.

I love that gun.

While not the Toklat, nor a 454 Mine is a 5" Super Redhawk in 44 mag. I also had a SRH in 480 chopped down to 4.75" that I sold. Both were/are very accurate. I need to use optics because of my 64 year old eyes. I have shot the 44 out to 80 yards and wouldn't hesitate to take a deer at that range.

Thanks for the replies. Keep them coming. I feel better about the accuracy. There was a post in a Guns and Ammo forum by a guy who said the Toklat throat was wrong and caused poor accuracy. Maybe it was just his.

Being as I am a member of the Guns and Ammo forum and have been for quite some time, I don?t recall that ever being posted there. I am one of the few members who actually has a Toklat on that forum.

Unless you meant a gun forum in general and not that particular one.

I can say that my sons toklat and all of our srh revolvers are more accurate than we are. If i put a scope on them and i have on all and bench rest for accuracy i can say that i can achieve sub 1? groups at 50 yards with everyone we own except the alaskans cuz i cant put a scope on them. When i say all i mean 6 of them. All have been very accurate so dont let that hold u back.

The throat problem you're referring to is a common quality control issue with both the standard length Ruger Super Redhawk and the Toklat. I certainly have it on my SRH, cylinder throats running about .454 to .455 instead of .452. It means you won't get decent accuracy with factory projectiles nor will you get the expected velocities (due to blow by). Fortunately it isn't the case with all SRHs, but is common enough to be a known problem. I've seen emails from Ruger in which they claim that throats of that dimension are within their specified tolerances and as such they won't rectify them.

As with everything, you pay your money and take your chances. Its a pity because the SRH platform is near ideal for a DA hunting revolver, likewise the Toklat barrel length. If only Ruger respected their customers enough to ensure proper dimensional control.

Note: If you want to cast your own projectiles, then the above issues aren't as important because you can get moulds to suit. With oversized hard cast projectiles, my SRH will easily group 6 shots into less than an inch at 25 yards.

Re: Ruger SRH Toklat - 01/22/2018 2:40 AM

This is the issue that I was referring to. Some SRH guns are Ok and some have the oversized throat is what you are saying. Not being very technically inclined I guess I won't be able to measure this in my Toklat. I will just have to see if it is accurate with my factory Federal 250 Barnes load. Thanks for the input. I thought I read it in some forum by googling Toklat accuracy. I believe it was a 2015 post. I was hoping Ruger straightened out this problem by now.

Certainly they have moved to using cold hammer forged barrels which should result in their barrels being much higher quality in terms of internal finish and tighter dimensional standards. I don't know if they have improved their cylinder chambers and throats.

ps I'd still buy a Toklat if they were obtainable in my country. It might be a bit of a lottery with regard to the throat issue but such an ideal package I'd risk it.

I have the Toklat, mine shot extremely low right out of the box using Hornady 240 gr. XTP, haven't tried any other load yet but am anxious to get it back out and shoot some 300 gr XTP and some 325 gr. hard cast.

I have a Toklat and really like it so far. I have the UltraDot 30 on it and have managed a few very good groups. I'm fairly new to the revolver game, but learning and I know the gun is way more capable than I am at this point.
That said I have put together groups at 35 yards with all shots touching with both 260 gr and 305gr cast. I have managed a couple decent groups at 50, but have a long ways to go to build consistency.
I'd buy another one in a heartbeat, especially if Ruger would offer a 480 version:)
