Pulled bullets

As much as I enjoyed shooting the hogs....this recent hunt was also a serious test of bullets I recently bought...There is an on-line company that Franchise showed me called Reloading Valley that specialize in selling pulled bullets from factory ammunition... The bullets I used were Swift .45 caliber 300 grain A-Frames which are gripped and pulled from the loaded case leaving two slight indentations just above the cannelure so with enough AA#9 powder to give me a little over 1600fps I placed two shots at a 100 yard target that were one inch cXc apart and 1 1/2" from the bullseye..Accuracy was as good as if purchased from Swift itself...
However, the main reason, which plenty of you guys will agree, is the price.... I purchased 50 of the .45 caliber A-Frames for
$29 or a bag of 100 for $55.... The Swift web site is selling 50 of the same bullet for $54...That is a savings of $25... If you buy the bag of 100 you are saving $53... I was wondering about those awhile back. Great info.

Those are a bargain. Allows for a lot of less expensive practice.

Many reasons. Certain lots failed to pass QC standards. Recalled ammunition for various reasons. Returned goods which most manufacturers will not resell for product liability reasons. Military does the same thing. "Pulls" of military bullets and brass are periodically available in certain calibers. All equates to good deals for the reloading community.

James, those are perfectly mushroomed bullets! Hard to believe they work that perfect! Gotta try some.

During the Shortage I bought a bunch of pulled and primed 30-30 brass at a good discount. I had to discard ~10%-15% due to crushed necks excessive runout, but the rest shot well.

Many years ago when I first got into reloading, I was given a quantity of loaded ammunition with the admonition that these were for use as "components only". Like so many other projects, they aged in the garage for lack of time and a bullet puller. I happened across an article, the source of which I do not remember, entitled "Are Plier Pulled Bullets Really Accurate". The author detailed his experiences of pulling lead bullets with a pair of lineman's pliers, reloading, and shooting them. He claimed there was little ,if any, difference in accuracy between the pulled projectiles and first run bullets. I got out my pliers and pulled and reloaded a quantity of .44 bullets. By golly, he was right, so I am sure the pulled bullets work fine. I did not try this method with jacketed, but it may work with some of them too.

I pulled a bunch of my own 25-06 100 Nosler BT reloads a couple years ago and just started using the old bullets. I shot my best group ever at 50 yards with 5 of them in one round 30 caliber hole.

It's the base of the bullet that matters the most. If the base is good then it will usually track right.

Some of the bullets will have a black substance on them. This looks to me like an asphalt based sealant. I have gotten pulled bullets from Lake City Armory that had what appeared to be the same substance. Easy to remove with disc brake cleaner, and a little rubbing. Does not hurt a thing if you leave it on. Out of 100 Barnes XPB bullets, 5 had a stain that I could not remove with the disc brake cleaner. There was something inside the HP on just those 5 bullets. I dug it out with a dental pick, and it was very fine treated corn cob. Looks like the vendor tried to clean the stain off by tumbling. If you get some of these and are going to try hunting with them, I suggest that you clean out the HP cavities so that expansion is not impeded.
