BUFFALO BORE 158 GRAIN JHC 357 MAG LOAD FOR DEER - 03/05/2019 6:33 PM

Has anyone used Buffalo Bore's 158 grain jhc 357 mag load for deer? Who's bullet do they use in this load?

I am thinking about using this load in my CVA Scout V2 357 mag to deer hunt next season. In this gun it does 1916 fps and shoots three shots into less than 0.5 inches at fifty yards.

The JHC moniker usually implies Sierra.

That?s hot! I think that?s hotter than my 10? TC Maximum with 180s. At that speed, I?d be hesitant unless it?s a really rough bullet. Also, if it?s that rough, it may cause problems if deer sneak up close as they sometimes do. BB has a 180 loading that looks like it may use an XTP. If you can get that to 1600+ FPS, it should be an outstanding deer, hog, whatever you?ll red to shoot load. The 180 XTP has been forcing Maximum shooters to clean deer for a long time!

I took a 140Lb doe a few years ago with that load. If I recall it went about 10 feet. Complete pass thru. Went through off side rib cage if I remember correctly. I think it is a Sierra bullet.

What did you shoot it out of and what do you think the velocity was?

I shot it from a 6" Ruger Blackhawk. I never chronoed that round.

Was a 30 yard shot.

I still have a box of it left. I was actually looking at it the other day as my son in law wants to use it this coming deer season. The data with it showed 1575 fps from a 6" revolver. if its the same round that you are referring to.

I've been experimenting with Underwoods 158 gr. XTP, supposedly running at 1500 fps. Very accurate out of my 3" Smith model 60. Haven't shot anything with it yet though. But XTP's have always done well.

I killed 5 very heavy 8 points in WV years ago with the 158 Sierra JHC out of my 6" Python. None ran more than 5 yds. All complete pass throughs. All double shoulder or rear edge of shoulder/lung shots. Internal damage was 1 1/4- 1 1/2" of destroyed and blood shot tissues.
Did at least that many does with 158 XTPs. Less damage, longer runs. Never have been a fan of XTPs in .357/.44/.454.
Never chronoed the loads, but my reloading manual suggested about 1350+ fps. Good enough for me.

I bet that recoiled a little out of a 3? J frame
