Texas Cull Hunt

Texas Cull Hunt - 11/25/2019 7:43 PM

Two weeks ago I spent a few days in Texas at a friend's (member trademark) property for a cull hunt. To say they are overrun with whitetail would be an understatement of epic proportions. On that first cold morning, when the light was just good enough to shoot, I drilled this first doe at about 35 yards with my BFR in .500 Smith & Wesson shooting Buffalo Bore's 400 grain JFP loads. Dramatic reaction to the shot. I climbed down from my stand, dragged the doe off 100 yards or so, and climbed back up. Drilled doe number two about an hour later at roughly the same range. Never have I seen a more definitive hit on an animal.

Day number two brought this six-point cull buck (he was estimated to be 4 1/2 years old) within 15 yards of my stand. He went down in dramatic fashion as well. It was a good hunt... A friend hunting there killed this free-ranging axis doe on day two as well with his Contender - gotta love Texas!

Also, the Texas whitetail proved to be the most switched-on and skittish whitetail I have ever hunted...

Good shooting & just barely enough gun to get the job done! Just kidding, use what you like, if they drop on the spot you don't have to track them. I shot a Red Fox once with my Ruger #1 45/70, he never moved either!

Hahaha! Thanks, Dick! The theme of the trip was that everything is bigger in Texas, so the logical choice was a .500 of some sort, and since I hadn't used this particular revolver on anything...it was a shoe-in!

Very nice Max.No such thing as too much gun for the game, if you shoot it well, and you do!
But a scope,for shame!

Just an idea, but if his ranch has an over population of white tails, maybe a members hunt might be in order. It would be a great chance for some of us to actually meet.
