Leupold scope Fail...again

Has anybody had the Leupold FX-2 4X scope fail? Mine has around 1200 rounds of full power .454 Casull loads on it and has failed three times.
It has custom M1 elevation turret and a CDS windage turret.
I like to dial in the fire solution and huck rounds way out there. When the scope isn't broke it does show good repeatability. However on a recent session, I dial up 27 moa and let the first one fly. My spotter calls the hit several feet high on the 300 yard plate. I thought WTF and let another go, same impact. I walk it down to 13 moa and start impacting the plate.
So now it's back to range with grid lines at 25 yards and yup sure enough the scope is moving 1/2 MOA per click not 1/4 MOA. It had always been moving at 1/4 MOA up until that point. I sent Leupold the pictures of the grid targets and the impacts given the number of clicks. Leupold won't let you talk to the techs who repair the scope and the customer service guy asked why I was shooting the handgun that far??? Um BECAUSE I WANT TO !!!
So I call Leupold again and send it back...again.
Does anybody make a scope with target (finger adjustable and zero resettable) turrets- that will handle large caliber handguns???
BTW the two failures were reticle related, as in canted about 20 degrees.

I do not take shots at game,coyotes maybe, at those distances but I enjoy practicing of the tripods at long range. It makes the 111 yard hog I recently shot (and dropped) seem like a give me.

Nothing wrong with dialing for distance as there are no good reticles out there.
The only etched glass reticle I know of is the Leupold 2.5-8. You can get the same turret set-up with it for what it's worth.

Thanks for the input. I'll reach out to Leupold and see about moving my turrets over to the 2.5-8.
I meant to say the first two fails were reticle related and the third fail was click value related.
I wish there were more options for handgunners.
I have been using my Ultradots lately but there are times when some magnification and Target style turrets sure come in handy.
My Nikon 2X scope has decent knobs and has yet to fail. Maybe the Nikon 2-8 could be the answer.

The cost of adding turrets is expensive.
I would let them warranty the one you have then sell it or put it on another handgun and start from scratch with the variable and order it from the custom shop the way you want it from the get go. It will probably be cheaper that way.

I spoke Leupold today and I was told that the 2.5-8 is NOT an etched reticle and that the FX2 4X is mechanically stronger than a scope with zoom drive.
All they can say is "we'll fix it when it fails"
The Nikon is discontinued and Burris won't install custom turrets.
So I guess I will just keep the damn thing. Good thing I have three other units that ride around in the hard case...just in case.
I'll follow up with how many rounds it lasts for this time, just in case anyone is curious.

thats too bad you are having trouble,
but I think as you have already alluded to, the Luepolds are our best bet, and normally an easy "go to" because of their quality and reputation (they have been mounting the 2x and 4x Luepold handgun scopes on all kinds of handguns for a long time)

I know I have had good luck with mine thus far. Switched to them because of all the problems I was having with Burris variables

Very seldom would I have an optic fail until I bought a 475 linebaugh. 1 ultra dot,a fixed 2x swift ( toughest scope ever) and a cheap variable. I quit running 420's at 1400 and my issues ceased. I haven't tried Leupold as I'm not a huge fan of them. I just reduced the load and ran it. Not happy about it, but is what it is.

That's funny I never really thought about it but, the only Leopold scope fails I've had was a 4X on my 475 and a 2X on my 480. Have had multiple and continuing problems with Burris scopes.

Well I mounted the 4 power back up and I'm heading to the range tomorrow.
I hope it's lasts forever... I doubt it though.

I don't know of a handgun scope that has an erector housing thats beefy enough for constant dial-up shooting, I know they have the cds system but it's more of a gimmick than a reliable elevation set-up.such as a nightforce s&b or even a leupold mk5.just sight it in and hold over for long ranges.I know that's not what you're looking for but such a thing doesn't exist right now.

Brendon, I had a 4X Leupold on my FA .475L for several hundred rounds without problems using all bullet weights. No problems. Switched to an UltraDot for several hundred rounds without problems.
JD Jones told me years ago he thought the old Simmons 2-7X was the toughest scope he could find to test on his JDJ rounds. I have 3, one on a .416 Taylor Encore for 500+ rounds, one on a Taurus Raging Bull .500 S&W for 500+ rounds, and one on a .41 Mag. Raging Bull for 300+ rounds. I've never had a problem with them.
I don't know if the newer 2-6X Simmons are as tough. Maybe someone could chime in on experiences with it.
A lot of people (as well as JD) gripe about the Burris variables. I'm using 10 3-12 Blexes and 2 2-7 non Bplexes on guns
and had exactly one problem (non function reticle) in the last 18 years. JD just shakes his head.

I guess you should have left the as issued turret on it. It's been beaten to death that Leupold doesn't have stellar tracking even when not abused with severe recoil. Why buy a Leupold and expect something different? Maybe you can talk sightron or nightforce into making a pistol scope!

I've had really good luck with scopes on heavy recoiling handguns..I have a 2.5 - 7x Simmons Gold Medal on my 411/338 Win Mag, a Bushnell 2 - 6x on my 475/350 Mag, a 2.5 - 8x Nikon on my 416 Barnes, a Bushnell 2 - 6x on my 500 S&W, and a 2.5 - 8x on my 445 Super Mag. I've never had a problem with any of them..steel bases and steel rings. Many others on different pistols, but these are what's on my heavy kickers. When I had a 376 Steyr, I had a Burris Variable on it. I never had an issue with that one either.

Hey Holler, In 2011 while prepping for an upcoming elk hunting trip, I had a Leupold 2.5 x 8 that also had an M1 elevation turret put on it by the custom shop. It was mounted on a FA M83 with TSOB base and three rings. The gun and load had showed tremendous long range potential. After less than 100 rounds that turret just couldn?t take the recoil and it flew off and landed behind me (luckily not striking me in the face). I sent it back and just told Leupold to put a standard turret on it. I think it was just asking too much of that set up. I have yet to have a fail of any other Leupold that was left standard.
