Scoping it out

Hey guys - been a long time for me but glad to be back.

Wanted to look at options to put a scope on my super Blackhawk and was surprised that there weren?t that many current options (especially from well known companies like zeis, vortex, meopta etc.).

I have $150 in Cabela?s cards and they only offer the Nikon force (which seems to have some negative reviews.
Guess I am wondering if I should stick with the red dot?

I prefer red dots, but scopes definitely have their applications. That said, I have a new Burris handgun scope that's a fixed 2X and it's pretty nice.

pretty limited -simmons,weaver,burris and leupold seem to get the most action from what i can tell. have all of them and no failures yet, however i dont have them on the real boomers either. I like variables but have a fixed 2x leupold on a 44 mag super redhawk that has done some amazing work for me out to 150 yards.
nothing wrong with a red dot- I have to keep my shots 100 yards or less because of the size of the dot on the target.

Like Max, I have a Burris fixed 2x on my SBH in 480. I has stood up to over 500 rounds of full house "baby Linebaugh" loads and never had an issue. BTW, I tried the "No Drill" scope mounting options on my revolver with little success so your mileage may vary if you go that route for a mount. Had to bite the bullet and have the top strap drilled for a mount. Might I suggest Warne rings for your application. they work great and I have had no issues with them on any of my hand cannons.

If the OP wants a Nikon he should act quickly, they are exiting the scope business.

I have several scoped handguns (T/C Contenders and Super Redhawk) and a non-scoped Super Blackhawk. I did put a Burris Fastfire 3 on the SBH because it?s been getting more difficult to cleanly see the front sight.

Handgun scopes are getting harder and harder to find. I picked up a Simmons 2-6x to put on a T/C Contender .22lr handgun. Bought it from a guy on another board. I?m also looking to pick up a Bushnell Trophy 2-6x for another handgun from the same board.

I had a couple 2X leupolds a while back. EZ to use and held there zero well. Red dots work better for me. Trijicon rmr and Ultra dot.

The biggest issue I have had with using a red dot, is that they don't gather any ambient light. I had a situation this year hunting deer where I could clearly see the buck I wanted to shoot with the naked eye and could have taken him easily with the cheapest rifle scope you could buy, however, I couldn't make him out at all with my ultradot 30! He was a nice one and was close enough to take with open sights. I've got a couple of 2x Leupolds I'd like to try now just to see if they will gather some amount of light.

All great thoughts. I have a Burris fastfire iii and 100 yards in ideal conditions is fine.
If Cabela?s/basspro would have a 2x pistol scope from leupold or Burris it would be a done deal (trying to use the $150 card).

Would scout scopes work?

Yes they do. My son prefers them on his guns. The intermediate eye relief works well in tree stands where it can be hard to get full arm extension due to awkward shooting positions. He likes the 2x7 Bushnell or Simmons,says the Vortex has too coarse of a cross hair for his taste. They have held up well on his 7-30 Waters.
