Looking for suggestions on a good mold for 10mm/40

My brother and I are starting to reload 10mm and 40S&W. Wondering how cast bullets work on Whitetail in this caliber and looking for a good mold suggestion that will cycle in a semi auto.

Plan is water quenched wheel weight lead. Is this a decent hunting choice, or more for practice and buy the hunting bullets?

Any advice/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

See the discussion recently on "question for bullet casters". Good relevant info while deciding. My relatively small experience with semi autos and cast is limited mostly to .45 acp. The only consistently good feeding bullet was a truncated cone style. Even round nose would hang up sometimes in the cheaper .45s. If I were to hunt with a semi-auto and cast I would get a truncated cone and send it to be hollow pointed. Several services sell the hollow pointing service to your mold or you can buy a complete mold already hollow pointed. Many configurations with some mold chambers left un-altered. I would test air cooled as well as water dropped. Water dropped are very hard and usually act as solid in my experience. Hollow pointing may help but I would test. Most revolver cast hunting has the large flat meplat and rely on caliber to do the work. Good luck! Keep us posted on what you find and decide.

I shot 2 whitetails with 170 gr. truncated cone leads in my Sig .40 S&W. Was not impressed. Ran a ways. Not much internal damage.
I tested a bunch of bullets in the .40 when it came out (on deer). The winner, by far, was a Sierra 165 gr. JHC. More internal damage than any other bullet tested and the shortest run of the deer. Actually dropped 2 in their tracks.
I'm thinking casts need to be a little soft in the nose area for damage, but with a hard base for penetration. Sort of like a NPT. Don't know if that's possible. I'm not a caster.

I agree, that is why I have moved to Jacketed. They are better than they used to be and usually repeatable/consistent. My lead bullet casting for hunting always did better to have water dropped large caliber for two full caliber holes. But I never delved into the hunting with the Hollowpoint molds that I have and I never tried softening the nose of water dropped bullets. Lots of options to try if cast is a must have for you. With all that said I did take a nice buck with 180 gr WFN from my 4 inch 686 this year. It is the one bullet that shoots so good that I have not found a hunting bullet to replace it with. There is an outfit up in Nebraska that make this bullet called an XTP. It does not lead your barrel or require lube. It is shaped like an ashtray and when it hits something solid it expand to 1.5 X its original diameter. They even put this little band on them that looks like the OD of a quarter that exact spot is where you crimp them.

I use them in almost everything I have.


Can you use a 38-40 cowboy bullet?

$10 /100 I would not cast and lube them for that.
