new purchase - 06/29/2020 12:46 AM

just purchased a savage striker in 7-08 with a weaver 2.5-8 scope. should be shipped on monday/tuesday. hoping to tune it for my wyoming antelope rig. anyone have any experience with the weaver scopes? planning on shooting Nosler 120 bt for goats. should be able to shoot to 400 yards with this and still have good performance. thoughts?

Steve and I have killed a lot of mule deer and antelope with both the 120 NBT and the 140 grain NBT.
Congrats!

Been running a Weaver 2.5-8 on my Savage Striker .308 for several years with no problems at all. Wish I had a couple more of them. It does get a little picky on eye relief above 6 power or so but nothing a little practice won't cure.

I have the Weaver 2.5x8 on several of my rigs. Never a problem. One of my favorites and they discontinued them.

I have been using the 7mm 120BT for the last several years. Much better than the original BT. I have never recovered one and most critters just collapse.

good to know on all counts,
Thanks for the feedback - I always question equipment that I dont have experience with. knew someone would be able to give some real world feedback.

I can not speak for the striker or a 7mm 08 but I have three Weaver 2.5 x 8 pistol scopes. One is on my CVA Optima V2 muzzle loader pistol, one on my CVA Scout 6.5mm Creedmoor pistol and the other one is on my 30 30 contender pistol. They have worked great for me.

thanks all. the price was $625 which I though was reasonable considering it had a scope. everything I have heard about them is that they are accurate which was my main concern and the gun hasn't been shot much according to the seller. hopefully i dont get a lemon.

Mine is the first edition [before the Accura trigger] and has broken the bolt head retaining pin 3 times so be aware. I carry an extra in the stock bolt hole now and have a couple more spares. Love the gun but mine has its quirks.

junebug,
does savage have a fix for this or do you just order three if you break one and go from there. this also a early pre-accura trigger. how many rounds do you normally get before breakage? I am assuming it is totally unpredictable

Re: new purchase - 07/07/2020 2:53 AM

Striker arrived today! i got it home and tore off the stock, cleaned up the bore is shiny. i had three different loads to try factory 140 grn remington core lokts, some 140 grain sp reloads and a box of hornady 120 grn reduced recoil loads. started at 25 to foul the bore and make sure it would hit paper. first cold clean shot was 2 oclock 1 inch high. the next two went dead center in the bull both in the same hole.
pushed out to 50 and one in the bull and then fired a inchish group with the core lokts, fired the reloads and another inch group. shot the 120's with the same results. seems it shoots fine and hopefully will improve with handloads. things are looking good to antelope season.

forgot to add that the inch groups were at 100 yards

They break when and where they want, don't really have a round count per pin. Mine is the older large diameter pin with the large firing pin as is yours . THE NEW PINS ARE SMALLER, AS IS THE FIRING PIN. I get pins from Midway or Brownells.
Savage won't touch the gun ,said they didn't make it, won't fix it, and don't have parts or people that know how. This was from the people that own Savage now. I patiently tried to explain that it had the Savage name on it but was told" we don't care we didn't make it.
I will not be getting rid of the gun ,I like it to well and it shoots to well, but it has its Quirks. My .308 shoots 130 gr Speer HP's real well and just about any 165 gr bullet with 43 gr of Imr 4895 will do sub inch. Trigger can be touchy to adjust much below 3 # with out slam firing. Good luck in Antelope season.

Suggest that you check out the older posts on SavageShooters.com.
You can also try to look a up a member on this board called BlueAvenger. He has forgotten more about Strikers than most people will ever learn, and is a nice guy to boot.
