your favorite 45 Colt loads - 03/14/2004 12:07 AM

What have you guys settled on for your 255 cast loads? I have some Penn hardcast 255's. I will be shooting them out of my Ruger BH 4 5/8". Anybody shooting in the 1100 fps range. Or am I asking too much from my short barrel?

my friend loads some kind of 255 gr.bullet for his 45.they are accurate and fast out of his 7 1/2 rbh.i recently bought a 4 5/8 rbh.we shot last week and my 45 with the short barrel was more accurate than it should be!he also loads a mean 340 gr.cast load that puts you back a step.the june 2003 issue of guns&ammo has "hot"loads for the 45 lc.they have a 300 gr.bullet doing 1,200 fps.then a 350 gr.going 1,100fps.so yes the 255 gr. should do what you are looking to do.do the bullets have gas checks on them?with the speed you are after a bullet with a gas check should work better.good luck with this overlooked and underloaded, powerhouse! jim257

Hey Dave...I'm using 25gr H4227 from my 5.5" RBH and getting 1300fps. Recoil is stiff on a cold day but it shoots really well. Did you mail order the Penn's? What was the turnaround time?? I just buy from them at a gunshow...going next weekend and getting more!!

Dan,
I mail ordered the bullets and they were at my door in Wisconsin in 4-5 days. Good service, I think!
I was told that leading shouldn't be much of a problem under 1600 fps with his mix.....your experinence?
...and couldn't resist some 270 Thunderheads.....me think's they fill the cylinder! Meplat measures .442!!
Cheers,
Dave

My experience with PENN bullets has been good. I bought some 320gr 44 caliber bullets from him and the leading was minimal. I have a Ruger SBH 4 5/8 that leads just about everything. With those bullets the leading though still present was greatly lessened. I just wish they would cast a Keith style bullet with a flat base.

I'm really new to the 45 Colt but I've been having some good success with 23.5 grs of W296 and the Cast Performance 300 LFNGC @ 1297 avg. vel.

What is meant by 'favorite 45Colt load'? Can there be such a thing? I thought .45LC was obsolete? Afterall, it doesn't say super whompin, meat-slappin, power Magnum? Oh I see, you meant .45 automatic Colt. Now there's a classic!

Dave...I shoot the Penn's through three different revolvers along with several Contenders and have minimal leading in each.

As a note to Bullelk...I was at the range one day shooting my .45LC with 255's (1300fps) when a few other fellas showed up. I heard them comment while we were posting targets that I must have been shooting a .44 Mag for something bark like my revolver was. Since they never directly addressed me I did not feel the need to let them in on the secret of the grand'ole .45LC!

Happens to me all the time! People who don't handload for it just don't understand! Like pork being the other white-meat, the 45LC is the other magnum!
