Price on a .357 Herret barrel - 01/22/2004 6:51 PM

I have a question... there's a 14" .357 Herret barrel with an old 3x T/C scope for sale on EBAY. What's the barrel worth? I have read a lot about the caliber and it's history and figuired it would be a great addition to my hunting line up. Does anyone use this caliber anymore? How is it on deer?

I have had mine for a couple of years I guess its a 10" tube with 2x simmons. Its a real good caliber for me accurate and easy to carry. It shoots 180 gr pills great. One other thing E Bay has always been pretty high to me on barrels.I bought mine from Eds for about $150.00 with dies.

From looking at it, I wouldn't go higher than $150 for the package. The scope wouldn't add much value to the package in my eyes, and the barrel has a fair amount of wear.

Thanks. I went to Ed's and saw the same barrel. What would compare the .357 to? I currently use a.375JDJ, 6.5JDJ, and a .45/70 barrel... yes, I like thumpers!

The 357 Herrett can be a thumper too, depending upon how you load it up. Take a look here for some reload data to give you a better idea of where it falls among other cartridges:

I have a 10" 357 Herrett Barrel that shoots well. I wouldn't hesitate to use it on deer out to 200 yards. Some may stretch it further than that, but that would be my comfort range with it. I have other barrels/guns for longer range.

IMHO, the Herrett cartridges really shine in a 10" barrel. In the 14" barrel there are better rounds available. IE - the 30-30 AI, or 309 JDJ, are great in a 14" barrel, but you won't find many 10" barrels in these calibers. The 30 Herrett, on the other hand, is just about right in a 10" tube. The same could be said for the 35 caliber cartridges, with the 357 Herrett a great choice in the 10”.
