Take 1 cast (preferrably swaged) lead bullet, 1 wooden dowel that fits the bore, 1 medium sized or mallet of your chioice and go to town. 
Swaging the barrel is the most accurate way. 
make sure the dowel is long enough that you don't hit the end of the barrel with the hammer. 
It'll make you sick if you flatten teh crown on the muzzle! 
PS-this only works with cast or swaged bullets. The 240 Hornady lead work real well as they are swaged and not cast(much softer)!

I don't know about the SRH, but I've had 2 SBH's and they both preferred .430 bullets.

swaged bullets??
not real sure what these are
i have copper "plated" bullets .
would these work if i remove the plating?
i take it i'm tring to deform the bullet and measure what comes out the other end??

Yes the idea of "slugging" the bore is to see what diameter you have. Then use cast bullets of the same size or a tad larger to fit the bore and hopefully give better accuracy.
I think your question is in relation to jacketed bullets in that there is a choice of the different sizes. (.429", .4295", and .430") I have 3 44 mags and use the .430" dia bullets with good results. I have shot the Speer gold dots at .429" and accuracy was good also. One thing you can check easly with out much trouble is the throat in the cylinder. Open the cylinder, take a few different size bullets and see if they drop thru the throat. All 3 of my 44 will allow a .430" bullet to pass thru.
