XP 100 conversion - 01/23/2004 10:02 PM

I have an XP100 that I am having customized. Any suggestions, as to caliber. It is currently in 35 Rem, so anything is possible in 473 boltface and beyond. Thought about something in WSM or WSSM. Any help will be appreciated

I guess my first question is what do you want to do with it primarily? What ranges do you plan to use it at and at what variety of game? Old style center-grip singleshot or XP-100 R (magazine)? The sky is pretty much the limit I have a small step above the WSM in a center-grip XP and know of another guy who has 338 WSM.

I am partial to the 6.5mm bore. What about a 6.5mm wildcat based upon the WSM? I have seen the reamers available at a number of places, including reamerrentals.com.

It's mostly used for varmitting with occasional whitetail. It is a center grip, single shot.It will have either a HS precision or Herrett grip. I'm truly leaning towards a 6.5-284 but the new 25 WSSM sounds interesting too.

Either cartridge you mention will work just fine. I have two specialty handguns in 6.5-284 (center-grip XP and a MOA Maximum). I have three XP with H-S's stock on them.

That's really what I'm leading towards. Ths only issue is that I already have a 260 Rem Encore and 6.5 JDJ Contender. I was thinking a diiferent caliber might be interesting. Thanks

If you need spice in your life move to a differnt caliber. I will soon have four rigs in 6.5 and I sort of like being able to use the same bullets to try with the different barrels. Saves money too!

magman,

Why not do a switch barrel? Then you could do a 22 on the case of your dreams and a larger caliber on a different case. You could also retain the .35 Rem barrel. Hows about a 22-243 Middlestead or maybe a 22-284 for the prairie dogs and ground squirrels?

Just a thought,

a17shooter, I had thought of a switch barrel at one point then decided against it. My wife would kill me if I got another setup to kill woodchucks. Thanks for the suggestions. I really like that 284 case so whatever I do will probably be based on that

I have several xp's. Two of them in short mag configuration 7 and 30, also others based on the 350 mag case 25, 6.5, 30, 338, 375 and a 458 2". THe 350 bsed cased numbers seem to be more effecient than the wsm cases, and velocity is equal or better. For instance the 300 wsm gets 2850 before extraction gets sticky and the 30/350 gets 2975 wiht the same barrel length and bullet weight. The 6.5 is actualy a savage striker and does 2900+ with the 120's and 2800+ with th e 140's

PistolHNTR, Thanks, for the input. Didn't even think of the 350 as a base case for conversions. BTW, nice deer and neat looking firearm. Thanks
