.454 Casull reloading. - 07/15/2007 11:24 AM

I hope to pickup a Ruger SRH in .454 Casull as soon as the permits through. Will be reloading and have heard its best to get a Redding Profile Crimp Die for this calibre. Also heard that if using lead projectiles, must use hard cast with gaschecks.

Any advice from those guys who already reload for this cartirdge?

I had to start using the Profile Crimp Die to keep lead bullets from jumping the crimp. I've never tried shooting non-gaschecked bullets but I suspect you would run into leading problems fairly often.

I use a 325 grain Cast performance bullet with a gas check over 28 grains of H110. I use a heavy roll crimp from a RCBS die and have not had any problems yet.

Well I didn't run into problems until I started shooting them out of a 4 3/4 inch gun. There was just enough extra whip with the short barrel to make them jump.
