Day Two Report...no'mo baldy tags!! - 11/27/2007 9:38 PM

Well...as of 1pm this afternoon I'm fresh outta baldy tags!! As I said in the "opening day" post...that would only happen should I get a shot of 400+yds. Well...here's the results of a 162gr A-Max delivered within 2" of POA at 460yds!!

With my big lug behind her she does not look too substantial in size but she was the largest of the four.

I was just sittin' along side my fire, munchin' some crackers and feelin' kinda drowsy when four deer came leggin' it across the strip cut and stopped where they apparently felt safe. I hit them with the 20X Burris to check for antlers. All were bald, ranged the largest with the RX4, dropped a cartridge in the chamber, held the 3rd SU of the 3-12x32 Burris just under her heart and sent the A-Max across the valley. She was quartering too me a little farther than expected. I clipped the near-side lung, through the liver, gut and exited the front edge of the right side ham. She ran forty yards and immediately laid down. After a few minutes her head dropped for good. I watched for 20 minutes until satisfied she was done then made the trek to get her.

This is my longest deer with a handgun by nearly 100yds. It also beats my longest rifle shot by 15yds. I guess I'm down to buck hunting now. \:\(

WTG Dan, Congrats on a GREAT SHOT. I sure wish you'd have been with me Sunday Morning about 10AM when I MISSED at 460 yards on the biggest Buck I have seen in many, many years.

Congrats again bud.

Not yet. My hunting areas are pretty level...few degrees up or down but nothing radical. But I did scout a place that the closest shot would be 500yds and about 30 degrees downhill!! After about 700yds the shots start to flatten out. It has a PERFECT concrete slab to shoot from (an old high tension tower footer) and lots of rocks and dirt banks to shoot at out to about one mile!! Lots of knowledge to be gained with that type of range. Would make those 500yd'rs seem like a cake walk. Guess I'll be needing some more gear...Swaro, ACI, Exbal, etc, etc!

The only problem is that deer in PA don't stand still very long....at least in my area. So to do all the calcs and get off a shot is tough. Even at close to 500yds a spotter to call dope sure would be nice.

Dan,
Once you get past 600 yards it is almost a requirement to have a spotter, especially with a SP.
Three possibilities on getting the deer to stand still:
One, is it legal to use decoys where you hunt?
Second, baiting can help an animal pause.
Third, a deer call many times will cause them to stop.
With the calling you have to have all of your dope down before you use it.
With the distances you are talking about it will be time to upgrade. It is a fun but expensive upgrade.
You may consider using a rifle scope as well.

John...had the .250SAI out this AM. Got skunked. I did take a few deer with it this summer in MD on the crop damage hunt. The longest was 281yds.

Oh Dan, you're somebodies Hero......Nice shot. I was out there for the opener. No baldy tags but it did not matter. I did see one buck (maybe legal) for about 3 seconds as it was sneaking past me in the drizzle and fog. No time to scope it! Anytime you need to practice on that hill and you need a spotter, you give me a call. Heck, what's $70 for gas and tolls compared to that fun?

Maybe we'll do that this spring. That will give me time to make up some swingers (the steel kind...not the kinky kind) and get them placed. May also try to talk to the farmer and drive back in...it's about 1/2 mile from the road to the shooting spot. If everything does not fall into place then we'll still have the usual shoot around the end of April.

That's pretty cool. Didn't get out in the woods this year. I spent Friday in the hospital getting some tests done. I did get out to the farm Saturday after Thanksgiving with my brother and his 12 yr. old son for some target shooting. I let them shoot the XP 257 Roberts AI. What a hoot that was!! It took us 20 minutes to convince my nephew it would be ok and it wouldn't hurt! \:D He did pretty good and ended up putting 5 shots thru it. Good fun!
