I'm glad I don't collect single actions yet. The SS Bisley hunters would be where I start if I ever do. I love the bisley grip and the looks of the solid rib across the top of the barrel.

Lett grip use to make grip panels for the Bisley in different color laminates. I have a set on my Single Six Bisley. Too bad Lett is closed now. \:\( Here's the final word.

Lett Custom grips has closed their doors, according to posts on the Ruger Forum. Too bad, Lett made the Original Equipment grips for Ruger for many years, plus offering some fine custom grips of exotic woods. Many of my Blackhawks and Super Blackhawks are stocked with grips of rosewood, walnut, and ebony, all crafted by Lett.

Now that just isn't very nice. I'm already running around in circle cause I can't wait. Well OK, being in pain and on meds. I'm not really running. More like a slow hobble with a cane.

Very nice sixgun, what scope is that? Weaver what?
Also I'll be 53 years old this month (stop laughing)and I already were glass', I was wondering about scope power. 2x 4x or a variable, I have only used red dot or open sights until now. I know I need some x power now. So what do you guys thing?

Re: Hey Rupe...here's a lil'teezer for you - 02/08/2008 8:59 PM

That's a fixed 2X Weaver...NICE scope! The .45LC wears a fixed 4X Weaver.

I like the fixed power scopes on revolters. I have a 2X Leupold on my 32 H&R mag and a 2X Leupold I have put on and off a SRH in 44 mag. A 4X Leupold sits on my 480 Ruger. I have another 4X Leupold and have toyed with the idea of putting it on a Sigle Six to see what the 22 mag cylinder is capable of.

Dan B. you are a mean man. I keep clicking on this thread just to look at that revolver, knowing that I will have one in a matter of hours or days. I also look at a picture that I have in MY PICTURES on my computer. I'm sure I will drive my self nuts until it is resting in my warm little hands.

You guys make it awfully hard sometimes. I don’t own a revolver. I am currently saving for one. But with all the choices available, sometimes you second guess yourself. “Well I can afford that one right now, why should I save up for that one again?”

Seriously you really need a revolver. I mean it, if you don't have one it could be a health problem.

The Surgeon General has determent that living without a big bore revolver is a hazard to your life. There for you are directed to buy one just as soon as you can!

This is a true statement, I saw it on the side of a pack of cigarette's???

I was doing some reading this morning (yes I can read, Dick and Jane are fine) about single shots, and now I'm think that maybe that needs to be on my wish list. You see the new little Ruger Charger just for a starter single shot for me?

Up until a few years ago all I had were revolvers and bolt pistols. A close friend of mine said he knew someone that was going to sell his TC Encore. Thought maybe I'd be interested. I had never really given the TC idea any thought. What I had was working good for me. I went and looked at the Encore, it was in nice shape and the asking price was way more then fair. So I came home and ask the board a few questions and did a little reading on my own. I bought the gun a few days later. Now I have 2 frames and 15 barrels. ;\) They are nice in the right situations.

Well have to order my SBH hunter. Gunshow didn't have any, couldn't believe it. They had just about everything else. The did have a .22 hunter. They had a sticker of $599.00 on it. Makes me wonder what he would have had on the .44mag hunter.

Re: Hey Rupe...here's a lil'teezer for you - 02/10/2008 3:30 AM

Yes they have 2 at least, but they are asking way to much. The gunshop that I'm going to start dealing with is in Philomath. Great guys. One of the shops we have here(Eugene) is lower then Sportsmens warehouse at $585. but Philomath is $559 with the life time replacement warranty is $577. I think that's pretty good. I will have it by next Saturday. I looked all over the Roseburg gun show today and no one had them. They said they could get them, but they were all up around $580 and up. I found one guy that said if I want to find out the wholesaler of Philomath he would charge me cost + $25 + $10 for uncle sam. He was working for someone else but trying to peddle for himself. I don't trust guys like that. He basicly wants me to stab my new gunshop guy in the back and use me to get info. for him. Nope I don't go for stuff like that. I don't care if it's a few bucks cheaper, I'm just not that way.

I have been shooting TC’s sense I was 17. I have more than I need, but never as much as I want. If I am going to shoot a single shot, I want to stay consistent. I have practiced enough to be able to shoot two hogs out of a pack with a single shot. I was going to thin out my rifle collection and extend my pistol collection, however, my wife wouldn’t have anything too shoot then. More importantly, she would be upset if I sold her rifles. Yes, that was multiple. So, I am content for right now.

Re: Hey Rupe...here's a lil'teezer for you - 02/10/2008 5:23 AM

Speaking of handguns, it was a little over an hour drive to the Gun Show, so after the show on the way back, I asked Mrs. Rupe how she liked it (Her first gun show) she said she loved it. We continued to talk about guns. She has been wanting a little Rossi 2" in .357mag. Well I started the thing about you know once you can shoot everything up close your are going to want to start shooting farther out and that 2" isn't really going to do it for you. Then it got to deer hunting and all that. Well we are now up to a .357mag in a 6". So now I need to talk her into one that a scope can be mounted. She has drawn the line at 6" period. So what am I looking at in .357 mag 6" double action. She doesn't want something that is heavy. What would you guys suggest? Off hand I'm just not sure. Remember I'm poor so we need to look at the lower priced revolvers.
By the way she is a very good shot with my .38 2" and my ex.SRH.454. She isn't new to shooting just to hunting.

Re: Hey Rupe...here's a lil'teezer for you - 02/10/2008 5:28 AM

I would watch for a good deal on a 686 S&W if possible, they are a much better gun than the Rossi or Taurus. I should ask will this be a commited hunting gun or also a self defense gun? If it won't be a ccw gun I'd let her shoot your SBH with some light 44spcl loads to see if she likes the feel of a single action.
Posted By: rupe

Re: Hey Rupe...here's a lil'teezer for you - 02/10/2008 6:04 AM

It will be for ccw as well. So you have to work with me here. It was all I could do to get the 6" barrel. I think getting her a 2" for carry and then get her a SBH like mine (Soon to be mine)to hunt with. But she is saying all she wants is one gun to do it all. Help me work with me here. lol She'll get to shoot my .44SBH but we are not going to beable to get another hunting gun before next deer season, but we might beable to get her a carry gun that she can hunt with for a season or so. hum this is not going to be easy with her being picky and unless we win the lotto this is what we are stuck with.
Posted By: wapitirod

Re: Hey Rupe...here's a lil'teezer for you - 02/10/2008 6:15 AM

you know I havn't bothered with my ccw, I always just keep my gun in my truck or on my hip when I'm in Eastern Oregon and I carry a 6.5" old model black hawk. I had a guy I know that went through some test course trying to become a cop set up a simialar course for us. He used a XD in 40 s&w and I had my black hawk. He unloaded lead a little faster than me but the human sillouhete he made out of plywood had scattered center mass shots from him and I had a 3" group in it's head shooting as fast as I could. I guess what I'm saying is from my experience and from the reading I've done a single action revolver is not at a disadvantage in a real world self defense situation as long as the user is competent, so I would let her see what she likes better. A ruger single action or the smith or ruger double action. The nice thing about a 357 blackhawk is that they are readily available and you can find them in nice condition used for about 300.00 if you look around.

I agree Wapitirod, here is an article by John Taffin that makes the same argument.

Re: Hey Rupe...here's a lil'teezer for you - 02/10/2008 7:24 AM

Me I have been through alot of shooting with double actions and auto's I can shoot alot faster with less to think about while your in a life threatening situation with a DA. Cocking and firing with one hand in a gun battle is alot harder to do under stress. A double action is point and pull. You will never change my opinion on this nor will a gun writer. Few people can out shoot a double action without spending hours and hours on the range. She won't be doing that. I don't do that anymore sense I quit the Sheriffs dept. Remember chances are she is going to be with in touching distance of an assailant. She will be fighting them off with one hand and bringing her weapon into action with the other. It's going to be a DA to start with, then if she wants to move on to a SA for hunting then she can.(I hope, I hope) In fact the more I think about it even a 6" is slower to draw and put into action, but again that is up to her. Maybe she'll have to use a rifle this coming season until I can afford a defensive weapon and a hunting revolver. Decisions decisions. She is talked into a DA 6" .357 at the moment. I'll let her read all this info. and see what she says.

Re: Hey Rupe...here's a lil'teezer for you - 02/10/2008 3:20 PM

My Dad has a 686 and he has really enjoyed it.

Beware of the man with one gun, for he knows how to use it.

Just because I don’t want an XP doesn’t mean they are not fine firearms. It just means I have groan accustom to something else. People have given me a hard time for shooting a singles shoot, but I have become efficient enough to shoot two hogs out of one pack with it. That is more like revolver shooting than it is single shot shooting. But it is really EASY IF YOU PRACTICE!

As for a slower draw? From what I have been told, she just kneads to learn her distances. Figure out what her minimal distance is and hold her ground if she is ever unfortunate enough to be put in that position!

Re: Hey Rupe...here's a lil'teezer for you - 02/10/2008 4:00 PM

CCW and a hunting gun are going to be tough to find in one gun. The S&W model 60 is a J frame gun that is offered in a 5" barrel, 5 shot 357 mag. My wolf has been looking at it for some time now. Her hands are small and the J frame fits her better than the K frame. I'm not sure how well it could be scoped. Also the gun is light so with "hunting" 357 loads it might not be pleasant to shoot.

Just another option to look at. \:\)

Scoping would be very difficult for concealment. Not to mention becoming very cumbersome.

I carry a Glock for work, but for our scenario traing we use double action revolvers with sim rounds containing a plastic pellet coated with dye. I have always been a fan of and shot single action revolvers prior to this. The scenarios are high stress and about as realistic as you can get without being in an actual shoot-out.

It has always been repeated to us in training that you will perform in an event the same way you train. That was driven home to me after my first training "shoot-out". In this incident both the suspect (who is a highly trained firearms instructor)and I got off four shots (and hits)in a very fast point blank exchange and in the same time frame.

When I went to holster my revolver, I realized the hammer was back. I had fired all four shots single action in about the same time the instructor fired four shots double action, without realizing that I had fired in that mode. I would have preferred to fire double action, but all those years of firing single action took over and I did not know I fired in that manner until it was over. This has changed the way I look at single action revolvers for self defense. The only handicap I feel I would have had is if there were no lethal hits and we were forced to reload and continue.

While a single action can't carry the number of rounds as semi-autos and most can't load them with the speed of a double action, I do not hesitate to carry them in the field for protection from four legged (and more likely two legged) critters. They are rugged, reliable and can be loaded to power levels that semi's can only dream of. They are not ideal for every situation, but they work for me most of the time.

Anyone who carries a gun for self defense should get in all the practice they can. I know I would not have performed like I did without many hours and who knows how many rounds fired with single actions. I feel the average person is better off with a semi-auto or double action. Not trying to change anyones opinion, this has just been my experience.

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n219/regnets1/2007_1130Image0024.jpg
Mine is a little older so I had to send it to S&W to get it drilled for a scope mount. The grips are big on this one so it fills my hand up. If you are looking at a 6 inch hunting gun I can recomend this one. the barrel length helps manage the recoil and the 38's shoot like 22s. If you scope the gun, I don't see how you would use it in a CCW scenario. but the one I own was dead on accurate with the iron sites as well. So I suppose you could use it without a scope until you can afford a nice ladysmith or other J frame for CCW. Nobody really talks about it, but I recommend hammerless double actions for women who want to carry in a purse or pocket since the hammer won't catch on anything when they have to pull it out. you get the best of both worlds. the reliability of a revolver and no hammer to hang up. anyway for what it's worth I hope it helps. And congrats on your SBH, I was looking for one of those when the S&W fell into my lap. The owner made me an offer and I could not refuse the price so I am still lookign for my SBH. \:\)

Re: Hey Rupe...here's a lil'teezer for you - 02/12/2008 11:03 PM

I remember when the 686 first came out. Our range officer ran down and bought one. It shot really well, him and I shot together off duty, that was back when auto's were just starting to show up on police dept. It was much better then the 66's were, not that the 66's were bad, but the 686 was a much heavier duty gun.

Regnets: That's nice rig. Nice deer too. Of course any deer you get with a handgun is a nice deer. I'll show her the pictures. She what she says. Thanks

Regnets that is a sharp looking Smith!

About 3 years ago I found a 586 (I think that's the right model #) with the 8 3/8" barrle and the sillywet sights. It was like new. I could not tell it was fired. The blueing was deep and dark with a shine you could comb your hair in. The price was really good. I went back a week later with cash in hand and it was gone. \:\( Such is life.

I can shoot straight and it's more like a shuffle then a run when you have to use a cane. lol So it's more of a side to side like your trying to hit a swinging target. LOL And I really doubt I could break an hour for the mile and half gimp I mean run.

Good spelling you get an "A" but I got a NEW GUN! Yes I got it and I have shot everything in the front room now. I put the Red dot scope on it and repeted the above. What a nice handgun. The trigger feels really good for a new gun. Tiny bit of creeping of course. But all in all it is a typical Ruger and it's awesome of course. I will post pictures as soon as Mrs. Rupe figures out and teachs me how to post them. Now I can't wait to shoot it.

Well that didn't work the way I thought it would. I think I may have to sight my new gun using this computer as a target.

Re: Hey Rupe...here's a lil'teezer for you - 02/19/2008 5:59 PM

I've been doing alot of in house practicing with my new toy and found that it has a really nice feel to it. The way it balances in the hand. A little front heavy, but it makes it so easy to hold it on target. I've shot about 200 non lethal rounds threw it now. (Also known as dry firing)It is sighted right on for fly on the wall shooting. It's a little early in the Fly season so there aren't to many around yet. There are a small number of spiders and I've been able to tag a few of them. But of course the best medicine for them is a newspaper.
So far the SBH Hunter has been very reliable, straight shooten, and quick handling for the game I was hunting.
The trigger still needs a little work to smooth it out and I found some sharp edges hear and there, typical for Ruger. I will keep you updated on how it's break in period goes and for any problems I expereance. Rupe

Re: Hey Rupe...here's a lil'teezer for you - 02/19/2008 8:24 PM

That's a cool idea. I think I have some snap caps somewhere, but I havn't got out my reloading stuff yet. That piece of yellow plastic that you see in the picture behind the cylinder I assume does the samething as well as letting you know it isn't loaded. I am a believer in dry firing some types of guns and not others. I've never broken or damaged any of them from doing it and I have one rifle that I've had for 41 years and is still fine. I think it falls into that Chevy and Ford arguement. No winner. LOL

Re: Hey Rupe...here's a lil'teezer for you - 02/22/2008 5:13 PM

Well Mrs. Rupe was trying to be sneaky and she blabbed out that she was leaving work early today. (My Birthday) Then she looked at me to see if I had heard her. I did, hee hee, I'm thinking box of ammo or reloading stuff or it could be something for our Jeep Wrangler. Tires? Nope can't afford those, but there is a good portable elect. air pump for $50 bucks that I showed her not to long ago. Hum? Going to be another long day. LOL
