XP-100 WSSM?

Howdy gents,

Im still working out my XP-100 options, which will probably be an ongoing debate inside my brain.

To help clarify, would there be any particular reason why I couldnt chamber the XP in a .25 WSSM?

Im thinking it would work out great but Im not sure about the action length, among other things.

Just my 2 cents. The WSSM's are DEAD! There are a bunch of great 25 caliber rounds out there that are better choices.

You also need to talk to a good gun smith that has experience with an XP. The WSSM line might be too big in diameter and I think it is for the size of the barrel/action area. Too get the proper performance the pressure is HIGH on the WSSM line and the chamber is too large so the barrel area is stressed too much and dangerous. But like I said get that info from a professional.

Many of us have XP's chambered in rounds much larger in capacity than the WSSM cases....all of which I know to be VERY accurate guns and have had MANY rounds fired through them. I had two Striker barrels in wildcats made from the WSSM cases. They shot wonderfully.

I have heard some rumblings by various smith's about the damage WSSM and WSM cartridges can cause with some actions. But other than some rumblings, nothing has been offically submitted by any of them. I do know that many will not make up T/C barrels for the WSSM and WSM rounds.

One wildcat you many have overlooked if you are stuck on the .257" bore.....check out the .25-284.

It will handle it just fine.

The action is plenty good 'nuff to hold it, but you will need a fairly long barrel IMO to get the most out of the capacity, at least 17". Like Dan said, the .284 case is more efficient and would not lack much, if any, in performance to the SM's.

The 284 case will outrun the WSSM and great/better brass to boot.

Yes I have to agree, there are better cases with better quality brass available then the WSSM.

+1 look at the 6.5x284 if you do not have your heart set on a .257

Yeah I have been considering that, because I really like the 6.5's. Theres a lot of good info on the 6mmBR website. Unfortunately what is consistantly being said is that the 65.-284 is great but is also a barrel burner.

If thats true, I honestly have no interest in having to get new barrels on a frequent basis. But then again, these are the benchrest shooters saying this.

I wouldnve guess the .284 case was more efficient though. Would teh same hold true for the .350 magnum case? They seem to have similar dimensions and capacities....somewhat

I've been thinking of building a barn burner and have been thinking of a quarter bore to do it in, Kirby Allen is doing one based off of a Dakota case that would be awesome in an XP I think. I would contact him over at Longrange Hunting if your curios about it.

My WSM is also considered a barrel burner...but at a rate of less than 150rds per year...it will last me a long, long time.

Most of the wear also is due to how the tube is cared for...getting them hot and poor cleaning methods are big barrel killers. As a "hunting" gun...the 6.5-284 would last you a long time. Now if you pounded 100rds through it every weekend, I'd expected a rather short life.

Now if the .284 case is more efficient than the WSSM case. would the 6.5 remington magnum also be more efficient than the both of them?

What do you consider efficient my XP in 7 Lazzeroni (proprietry short mag)shoots 160gr's 3000fps and 168gr's 2850fpswith less than 70 gr's of powder. I think it's pretty profiecnt but that's just me. And I'm like DanB I won't shoot it enough to worry about wearing out the barrel.
