handgun load - 09/09/2008 2:00 PM

I have a Ruger .44 and just bought some new 240gr. XTP's bullets and want to handload them instead of my 240 SWC. Any good combinations anyone know of? My other load was 240 SWC 22.5 of 296 powder with CCi primers. Thanks for any info Shrades

I was loading 240 grn XTPs over 24 grns of H110. This gave good accuracy in mt SBH Hunter 7.5 inch. Lately I have been trying to load heavier bullets for elk and found the 300 grn XTPs over 19 grns of H110 were superior in my revolver.
Most of the manuals I have read list lower charges for the XTPs vs the same weight of other brands.

Does it matter what primers I use? I still have a box of the CCI's and would like to use them.

As long as they are magnum primers they'll work fine.

I started to load with the 240 XTP over 24 H110. I am getting good results on paper. My question is what would be a maximum range for this load? For whitetail.

21.0gr of 2400 shoots great with that bullet in my redhawk.

I've used 22.gr of 2400 with 180s and 240s in my SRH and they shot well.

I assume you are hunting big Iowa whitetails? In good conditions with a scope and a rock solid rest I would shoot out to 100 yds assuming I could group well to there.

Yes I am hunting whitetails. I have used the 240 SCW in the past, but i have used the 240 XTP in my black powder gun for a number of years and it works great. I do use a scope and try and get a good rest as much as I can.

240xtp with 23.5 grains of H110 and CCI 350 mag primer and a good crimp works great for me. 1450fps out of my Ruger SRH with 7.5" barrel and 1750fps out of my marlin 1894 44mag with 20" barrel.
