Hunting with the wife

Hunting with the wife - 10/05/2008 6:00 AM

Well, I woke up this morning and told my wife that I would be heading into the woods again but for an afternoon/evening only hunt/scouting session. As you all know (or some of you anyway, as I have stated in a past post) my wife does not like when I go hunting/scouting by myself. She has also stated that she needs to loose a pound or two (hope she doesn't read this post) and would like to take the walk. So off we went, my wife and I, into the North Georgia National Forest looking for wild game. Now let me start off by saying that my wife does not have anything against me killing wild animals, but she couldn't kill anything herself. Still she trekked into the forest with me to my surprise. We spent about 5 hours scouting. I showed her what the difference is between white and red oaks and what muscadine vines look like as well as deer droppings and what all else to look for (keep in mind that we are originally city folks from Brooklyn NY and this is her first time scouting). We had a really good time, but still I don't think she will be able to or has an interest in "making the kill". I was disappointed that we didn't see any game animals and I saw much more deer sign last year. Don't think she will be going into the woods again, but it was nice to see her show some interest. Some of you hunt often with your wives, some once in a while and some not at all. I never expected to take my wife into the woods. My daughter is 8 and still shows no interest in hunting although she likes to shoot. My son is 4 and has shown some interest with asking questions but hasn't yet wanted to go (except for the one time I took them both squirrel hunting on a hot Georgia afternoon), but I am hoping that will change within the next couple of years. Of course I don't want to push them.

Sounds like an enjoyable afternoon. I am very glad for you.

My wife has been my main hunting partner for many years. She really isn't into anything except Deer Hunting and that is OK. It is one thing we truly enjoy doing together each and every year.

When my wife and I were dating years ago she could hardly take my picture with a deer. Years later after we've been married and she was 8 months pregnant she watched for the first time me gutting a deer. She threw up, she said it was morning sickness, I don't think so.

Now all that stuff is old hat for her. I bet with in 3 years she'll want to hunt. She getting closer she even talks about it once in a while.

My wife spotted the deer that we took last year. I fired, she helped field dress it. It was a proud day for me. This year, she wont be able to come along, as we are new parents to a baby girl. Maybe next season we can get a baby sitter!

Congrats from me as well. I am betting that before long that new little girl will be wanting to go out hunting also, I know both of my daughters enjoy Deer Hunting.

It is a lucky man who's wife will go out with him even if they don't hunt. Congrates for getting her out there and who knows, maybe she will start wanting to go out more often. Just keep inviting her to go along. We all know that it isn't all about hunting. Just being in the outdoors is the main thing and if you do bag something, it's just frosting on the cake.

As I said in another post Mrs. Rupe got her tag for the first time this year. Blood and guts doesn't bother her, so she shouldn't have a problem with that. She has always gone hunting with me sense we have been married. So now she wants to give it a go.

Give 'em a chance DD; the kids will show interest when/if they're ready. Maybe soon. Glad you got to spend time with the wife in the field; just another kind of date really. Sounds like she had a good time.

She did mention that she had a good time and enjoyed "spending time" with me yesterday. Thought I was gonna get one of those "yeah but that's different cause we were doing what you like to do". Now if I could only convince her to change "date night Fridays" to "date day Saturdays" and get "Friday night poker with the fellas" back.
Nah... Im not even stupid enough to try!!

Have you guys read my article called "The Date"? It's in the hunting section. The same idea might work for you.

My wife and I always deer hunt together and she normally gets the bigger bucks which suits me fine. I get more enjoyment out of watching her get a nice buck than if I shot it myself.

Well lost my first wife because of hunting and got a fiancee that don't mind going scouting but doesn't want to be anywhere around when the gun goes off, tender hearted.I'd say if you got one that hunts your are extremely lucky, one that tolerates it lucky.one that don't get it...unfortunate.It sure makes things easier if they can enjoy your likes alittle the way we have to tolerate thiers.

Well its a good thing you didn't lose hunting because of your first wife. I don't understand why some women cant understand that we have our hobbies and our hobbies keep us out of trouble. Would they rather we spent our time at the bar drinking and meeting other women. We do need to keep our priorities in prospective though. There are many days I dont go hunting just to do family stuff. Do I regret not hunting those days... Nah. Love my family. I have been extremely blessed by God and thank him everyday. Now I just have to get the family to go hunting too. I'm working on it!!

My wife is going deer hunting with me for the first time next month. She has her own rifle that she shoots well. She is worried that she will be sad or upset by the killing. She seemed to feel better after I explained that no one would be upset with her if she passed on shooting. There is much more to hunting than the kill. I am looking forward to almost a week in the woods with my family.

Yep that's what I told my wife. You don't have to shoot. But if I haven't filled my tag yet, I'm going to take it if she doesn't. So either way that deer is going to be killed.

My wife is satisfied with butchering what I bring home, and that in turn satisfies me. I would love to have her in the woods with me, but I also realize that a lot of wives would shudder at the mere sight of a deer haunch laying all bloody on a plastic sheet on the kitchen table, and go get their nails done or something 'till the mess is cleaned up. We're a team, Momma and I, we just play different positions.

I killed my first deer at around 19 or 20 years old and looking at that animal lying there breathing heavy with a hole in its lungs as it sat there and died was a humbling experience. The experience is truly one that I will never forget. I think this is one of the reasons why we get buck fever the way we do. Hunting for me has been an addictive sport (if we can call it that, I didn't hunt as a kid so not sure if I can call it a tradition either). I believe she will feel bad at first but as you all know, that "feeling bad" feeling goes away or gets less intense the more animals you take. I hope she can bring herself to do it but if she doesn't, there is no reason for her to be upset with herself either. Its only natural for her to feel that way as she would have just taken one of God's creatures that He has put here for us to take.

Tomorrow is Mrs. Rupe's Birthday, so I asked her what she wanted to do. She said she wanted to go to this fancy place for brunch then go for a drive in the country and throw in the guns in case we see something. That's is great, she wants me to take her hunting on her Birthday. Wahoo!

After all my wife is my best friend for better or worst and all the other wedding vows. I blessed to have one that if I get a gun she gets a gun. I get to shoot at an elk one year she shoots at one the next year.
