New to guns......

Needless to say I'm new to this site, anyways, I just recently took the test to own a fire arm and had a couple questions. I've never owned or shot a handgun. I'm just looking to own something for my home and not into hunting or anything like that. Just was hoping someone can point me in the right direction or make reccomendations on what to purchase. Thanks in advance

if it's going to strictly be a home gun for self defense I'd look at the 357 mag in a revolver. Since your new to handguns a revolver has less of a learning curve than an auto and generally are more reliable. My pick would be the S&W 686 with the 4" or 6" barrel for home defense but there are others on the market that will work but I'd stay away from the "cheap" guns such as Taurus or Rossi because with firearms you generally get what you pay for but if you stay with a Smith or Ruger double action you should have a gun that will last you a life time and will be a good shooter out of the box. The most important thing with you being new to handguns is to find someone to help instruct you and spend alot of time at the range becoming proficient, alot of people by guns for protection without learning proper handling and they become more dangerous to their families than the intruder.

I appreciate the input, thanks. So should I stick with new or used? I'm looking to spend around 500-600. I don't know if it makes a difference or now, but I'm in California so I'm sure pricing may be higher just like everything else.

I would get a used 4" or 6" Model 586 or 686 S&W (585 is blued & 686 is stainless) and practice, practice, practice, be safe, and have a lot of fun.
I have a 6" 586 and my dad has a 6" 686 = Both shoot great!

Excellent recommendations from all. With a 357 Magnum revolver you can practice with .38 Special rounds. They are cheap comparatively and hardly recoil at all. The only physical difference between the .38 Spl. and the .357 Mag. round is the magnum has a slightly longer case than the .38 Spl.

I'll say it again practice practice practice. You should join the NRA too. They train instructors and can provide you with a list of qualified individuals in your area that can provide some instruction.

I second wapitirod and Gary. Make sure you don't become more of a danger to yourself or family. As far as used goes, good quality used guns are available...its all a matter of your budget which by the way will have a tendancy to creep up on you when you get looking in more detail as to whats out there. I know, I have been looking for a new gun for myself for a while and my budget somehow has become larger. I think its because I joined this site and started listening to these guys...lol...they can show you some mighty nice stuff in a hurry...whatever you get, become proficient in its use and function and you will be fine.

as far as practice i will suggest getting into a pistol club that shoots regularly.It can be a lot of fun and they can teach you proper technique. NRA could help you find a club near you.
