Im entertaining the idea of buying a 30 herret barrel for my encore, it is a 10 stainless custom barrel. Is the 30 H a good round and are they shooters. Is the brass cut down 30-30 or fireformed only thanks for the help Ron

Yup. I shoot the 30 Herrett. Great cartridge, fun to shoot, easy to carry and wonderful on gane up to 170 pounds or so. I've taken antelope out to 165 yds and a few muley does. I've used it in IHMSA and have made hits on rams at 200 yds that went down just fine. The only bullet you'll ever need is the 125 Nosler BT, but I use 150's for IHMSA Rams. Cases are really easy to make; but get a case trimmer die for the inital trim. I like the Federal brass but have used Remington and WW w/o problems...just keep them seperated.

Have fun with it!!

I second Huntkings assessment of the cartridge. I also use the 125 Nosler BT for hunting and it works great. I used that bullet a few years back years to take a 12 point whitetail that weighted 180 pounds dressed on certified scales. ( Thats big for western PA). 70 -80 yards quartering away one shot dead right there out of 10" contender. Complete penetration and really messed up the boiler room. I have used 150 grain Hornady SP to shoot steel and they have similar 100 zeros. Have also used 100grain speer "plinker" bullets with unique powder for low velocity small game loads.

Years ago I had a .30 Herret on a Contender frame, good cartridge. My only thought would be that you could use a much more potent .30 caliber cartridge (and one you didn't have to make brass for) on that heavier Encore frame, but if the .30 Herret is what you want that's great, go for it.

The 30 Herritt is a great round for the 10" barrel because it burns powder better than a 30-30 in the shorter barrel. I didn't want the hassle of building the brass so, I opted to get a 14" 30-30. The extra 4" of pipe pretty much even things out. Plus I already have a Marlin lever-action and can get 30-30 rounds anywhere.

kunas...it is a sweet little cartridge. I happen to have a .30 Herrett barrel that belonged to huntkng. Accuracy is great...usually sub one inch groups at 100yds and ringing a 10" steel plate at 300yds is childs play.

It's a great 150yd deer cartridge when loaded with a 125-130gr bullet. Mine shoots the 130gr Hornady SP very well with RL-7. It's accounted for several deer between 65yds and 110yds, including my biggest buck...a non-typical 13pt.

I was sorry the second I sold that 30 Herrett bbl to Dan, couldn't stand it and finally found another...your not getting this one Dan!

I found the same accuracy with my second bbl as I did with the one I sold to Dan. Usually under an inch @ 100 yds and with the BT's it is a real hunting caliber. I settled on IMR4198 as a powder and never looked back. But, now that Dan mentioned it, I may have to try RL-7.

A classic! I bought mine back in 1979 and still have it. Great cartridge and fun to shoot. Taken a lot of Mule Deer and Antelope with it. I agree on the 125 Nosler BT, it works great.

I picked up a 10" 30 Harrett barrel this week for the Wolf. It should be a good one for her to start with. I formed a couple pieces of brass the other day.

I have an older 10" barrel. The throat is very long in this one.

I'm also shooting the 125gr NBT. I'm having velocity variations of over 100fps from shot to shot. Any idea what could be wrong? I've tried H110, Lil-Gun, H4227, AA1680, RE7, AA2460, Ramshot TAC, and even Varget - all have the same variance. Also it seems that velocity is low with max book loads.

Any ideas?

I also have a 10 inch barrel and am interested in some load data. I lucked out and found some used brass to start out with. Once I fire formed it to my gun , I neck size only the brass. I'm currently using AA 2230 powder because I was already using it in my 14 inch 223 Contender. What are you guys using and how does it work on wild hogs?
