new to handgun hunting!! need advise - 10/26/2009 5:25 AM

I am looking at buying a ruger super blackhawk hunter or a super redhawk in 44 mag. Does anyone have any advise??

I have shot a 44 mag before so I do know what the recoil is like. Used to go to the range with my brother shooting his old blackhawk.

Also I am going to buy a t/c encore next year in .243 or 7mm-08 for deer hunting also. Is the 243 good for 300 yards in the encore or would the 7mm-08 be better?? Thanks Dave

the Redhawk and Blackhawk boils down to personal choice, they are both built like tanks and they both are capable of excellent accuracy. The things to consider are which one feels best in your hand, do you prefer double action to single action and weight. I prefer single actions for nostalgic reasons plus I like the feel of them in my hand but others prefer the feel of a double action. You also have the option of the Bisley frame in the Blackhawk so I'd suggest handling that one also if you can. I also have never seen any real advantage to a double action for hunting as most shots are made single action and even in a crisis situation someone competent with a single action can empty the cylinder in a hurry which also brings up the fact that a double action is faster to reload but that too normally doesn't effect a hunting situation. The last thing is the Redhawks are generally a little heavier than the Blackhawks. I would definitely try to handle the Blackhawk, Bisley Blackhawk and Redhawk before making a decision and if you can shoot them that's even better. The one other thing I almost forgot is that they handle recoil differently. The standard Blackhawk is designed to roll in your hand whereas the Bisley and double action have more of a tendency to push straight back into your hand. Good luck and welcome, if you have any other questions feel free to ask.

IMO....Super Blackhawk Hunter w/ 2X or 4X Weaver. I have the .44 Mag and .45LC models of the Hunter and each one wears one of the above mentioned scopes.

For the Encore...get the 7mm-08.

I would also choose the 7-08 over the 243 in the Encore.

blackhawk i got RH it a good deal but i want a BH so i would have
both. and the 7mm-08 is a better long range gun then the 243
the 243 is 200 yds but that is IMO i like my 7-08

Either of the Rugers would serve you well, it's just a matter of DA/SA preferance. With the Encore, get the 7-08.

Buy them both because once you start hanging around this site you'll have those 2 Rugers and probably many more!

I'll have to agree in spades w/my cohorts above. However. Try used unless you don't care to wait. It'll save some cash for scopes, ammo, etc. Rugers are fairly abundant used. Keep checking the classifides here. I've seen some pretty fair deals right here.
