copper 44mag - 11/21/2009 1:16 AM

after reading the hard cast vs jacked. i have a copper question i just got a super 14 44mag barrel( dont tell the wife) any one have any advice on what to use i know copper has a specific velocity requirement on the rifle bullets in regard to expansion but does it make much of a difference on the pistol calibers.

all i care to hunt at this point is tasty bacon if that matters

most copper jackets soft point and hollow will expand at 1000 fps in 44s the more the more expands

Hi, My name is Rick. I am new to the forum & handguns. I would like to ask your advice on a load. I have a Ruger Super Redhawk - 9.5" barrel in 44 Mag, topped with a variable Leupold. Virtually my first firearm. While in Texas for work, I worked up a load that I really like, intended for Deer, Elk & Bear (have not gone hunting with it yet, but practice every chance I get). 310gr Oregon Trail True Shot-cast, over 23.0 gr of H-110 (1400 fps.).

When I arrived back in Southern CA. I discovered that my zone is Solid Copper (non-toxic only). The largest .430 bullet I can find is 225gr XPB Barnes (I am hearing of 1200 fps.). Are there any heavier .430 Copper Bullets (<1% Lead) out there?_______.

Would you be comfortable using this out of my revolver on a Southern CA Muley - 60 to 75yds?_____. Bear?_____.

don't know if there are any heavier copper bullets but the 225gr barnes in the 55 will do fine on animals in the mule deer to black bear size in yardage ranges your talking about.

Welcome to the Forum Rick!!!

I think Rod ment 44 and not "55" LOL

The Barnes bullets are really tough. I would have to say that will handle just about anything you want under 100 yards.

I used some of the 225gr XPB Barnes in my Ruger Redhawk. As I remember they were very long for there weight and I had a hard time getting them seated over a full charge of H-110 and still fit the chamber length. So a heaver copper bullet would be even longer. Maybe that's why they don't make them heaver. I don't know if that may not be a problem with your supper Redhawk

Thanks for the replies. Makes me feel better about the 225gr XPB's. I'll try emailing them for load data.
