Handgun Cases - 03/07/2010 1:16 AM

I'm curious what is the best handgun case to use to travel on hunts ,like on airplanes. I have heard so many horrible stories that the people at the airports damage hunter's gun cases and guns, just don't wanna be one of those guys. I plan on a couple of hunts away and could use some advise. I plane on taking 2, 15" Encore's. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Jeffx, I have used several over the years. Normally I use a break-down shotgun case which holds two scoped handguns. One I have now is an ICC Impact. Another one that worked well for years was Aluma-Case from GA. Bob Baker of Freedom Arms has Bear Track Cases that are excellent too. These three I have used with good results. If traveling by air, don't try to cut corners with a cheap gun case. Your guns are too valuable.

The take-down shotgun case will fit in the bottom compartment of some large duffel-type bags. I put my case there and it doesn't draw attention or get the same brutal treatment.
Best of Luck,

Smart thinkin' there. I don't travel by air so never dealt with that, but have heard good things about Pelican.

I also have a case a little smaller than a shotgun case although it isn't built to take severe punishment, but would fit in a duffle:

I use a full size aluminum double rifle case from Cabela's. I think they call them Bulletproof cases. It gives plenty of room to keep the guns apart and has room for bino, LRF, spotting scope and still comes in under the weight limit. I have flown over 20 times with this same case and it is still in great shape.

Jeff,

Although on the pricey side, Pelican cases are hard to beat (and break). I have also used Plano Gun Guard AW series cases for many years now, stuffing both short and long guns in for flight travel - very durable, pressure release valves, etc. Not a bad option for the budget conscious...

I have just acquired a Plano AW Gun Guard (won in shot'n match). It is built very well. I rated it a close 2nd to the sea gull, (wrong bird) I mean, Pelican...;) mine is the take-down shotgun version that should serve very well for handguns.

Bear Track cases from Freedom Arms are the best that I have seen.
