HHI 2010 Antelope hunt

HHI 2010 Antelope hunt - 10/18/2010 9:53 PM

After 28 years of waiting for a chance to bag a prairie goat, success at last. And in the process may have brought a new member into the handgun hunting realm. My life long friend from Colorado accompanied me on this hunt and was my spotter and my voice in the back of my head constantly saying not that one we can find a bigger one. Glad I listened. It was a blast and the folks were all top notch. Made some new friends as well. The Folks at the Durham Ranch were great hosts and very nice people. Thanks to all those who made this possible.

Craig, Thank you for starting this thread; takes the load off me and let's them know for real.

Here is a favorite part of the hunt: Giving the T/C Encore (thank you T/C Arms!) to a happy HHI Hunter.

Gregg Richter, HHI Antelope Hunt Coordinator, presents Craig Fishel with the Thompson Center Encore .308 Pro Hunter outfitted with a T/C 2X7 Recoil Proof Scope, donated by Thompson Center Arms for the 24th Annual HHI Antelope Hunt.

I second cfish2's sentiments. It was a great hunt and compliments to Gregg Richter for an outstanding job of organizing and running such a fun hunt. I was lucky to get my antelope with an XP-100 chambered in 6.5 x 47 Lapua using 120 Nosler ballistic tips over 37 grains of RL-15 at 2650 fps.It was a broadside shot at 260 yards and he just dropped at the shot.I also got a bonus coyote. My thanks to Fred Kemmerer for his expertise and assistance.

Re: HHI 2010 Antelope hunt - 10/20/2010 1:26 PM

Well, to answer some questions, yes that was my 7mm-08 I shot my lope with. I planned on using the 6.5 but the gun gods were against me. It, for reasons unknown yet, gave up the ghost upon arrival and was all over the place. The back up gun was the 7mm-08 and it was on. I was using 120gr ballistic tips over 43 grains of varget. The lope was 85 yards after a 1/2 mile dash through a deep draw then a belly role through some cactus, which hopefully i pulled the last needle out last night. I had to catch my breath to settle down and was afraid he was going to run as he was the dominant buck amongst three others and had a herd of 26 does with him. A small buck pulled him away from the does allowing me a clear shot.
It was a hunt of a lifetime and made some great new friends. Oh and Ernie, thanks for the show and tell after dinner. I would love to spend some time learning from you about those long range Handguns. Guys those things are impressive to say the least.
Thanks again Gregg for a great time.

Re: HHI 2010 Antelope hunt - 10/26/2010 12:10 PM

To add to what cfish2 said...It was an awesome hunt, something I had been wanting to do for years. With my handicap it proved to be a hard hunt but i wouldnt wanted it any other way. It was demanding hunt for me with a lot of walking and a bunch of stalks...but I killed a nice Antelope Buck, and had some great times with new people I met. I would like to Thank Gregg for making the Hunt run smooth, and everybody at the Durham Ranch for a great place to hunt and there hospitality was top shelf.

Pic's to follow soon.

Jeff, just wanted to add that it was great getting to know you and that little 22hornet was deadly on those prairie dog towns. Jeff, was a crack shot with that little pill.
