Iowa Buck - 12/25/2010 5:12 PM
New member; 8th handgun deer. S&W 500. Christmas eve. Blinding snow storm.
In Iowa handguns (no "rifle" rounds) are permitted during the late muzzle loader season. I hunt public ground that is over-crowded during the regular seasons, but apparently they missed this guy!

Congrats and welcome to the site!
Nice deer. That looks like a 500 Hunter. What kind of scope? I had the same set up with a Leupold 2x8 on it. Did you use shooting sticks,or a rest? What was the range? Thanks! - Ted

I use a Nikon fixed 2x. Wider field and quicker acquisition, I think. (I used to bleed Leupold until I tried this one.) I use a Stony Point pole cat single stick rest. Sitting on a small folding chair; he never saw me.
I didn't range, but guess about 50 yards. Right through the heart - immediate drop. Heavy underbrush, so had to follow through the scope while watching ahead looking for an opening to "thread the needle". Those are always some tense moments.
I use a .500 Remington 385gr CLHP over 40.0gr H110. Used that for years. I actually recovered one once and if I can find the pics I will post.
