contender 50 cal.black powder - 12/30/2010 6:22 PM

I have recently acquired a Thompson contender older version.
I have a 30-30 and 22LR barrel for it. Are there 50 cal black powder barrel available and has anyone had experience with one?
If so where do you find them? Thanks

Bullberry made mine:

I bought it during one of their "stub" sales and it is 13 3/8" long. I shoot 240 grain Hornady XTP's and Remington JSP's in it with 70 grains of Blackhorn 209 at 1250 fps. It gives .44 Mag revolver performance on game.

Good luck in your search!

I have a factory 15" 209x50 encore barrel and just sold a t/c custom shop 209x50 15" barrel.
I use mine all the time for deer hunting because it is the only handgun barrel I can use to hunt deer around me. I have taken more deer then I can remember with it.

You have to watch what bullets you use with the 15" barrel because they all will not expand when fired from the short barrel. I have had a good luck with the barns 250 gr copper bullets and the Lightfield alpha gold 300 gr bullets. the 250 and 300 hit very close to the same POI. Think of the 15" 209x50 as a 44 mag or a light 454 and keep the shots resonable.

By all means stay away from MGM. If you look long enough you can find a factory barrel. the best thing about the factory barrel is that it has the ramrod thimbles so you do not have to carry the ramrod seperate.

RickP, I am curious why you say stay away from MGM? I have nothing but praise for Mr. Kerry of MGM, he has made numerous barrels for me as well as rebuilt 2 Rem 700 to custom rifles. and they are 1/2" shooters at 100 yards. Also Bullberry is a good barrel maker but kinda slow getting one to you. My ML'er Barrels shot VG and I shot the 240 grain 45 Caliber HP sabot bullets w/70 grains of 777 and it served me well. I now use my ML'er Savage smokeless no muss no fuss non corrosive. Load it today shoot, load again and shoot, for the whole season W/O cleaning ( I'm Lazy ) Lou

I really don't remember ever seeing an older Thompson with a black powder barrel.

I do remember the ads for them, but I can't say I have ever actually laid eyes on one either.

It is a very long story, shoot me an email or PM and I will give you some of the information about it

T/C did make M/l barrels for both the G2 (not the contender) and the encore but I think they are no longer making them anymore before the custom shop closed the encore M/l barrel was a custom shop order only.

Am I correct in thinking a G2 Black Powder barrel will work with my contender?

If you mean off the shelf, you are incorrect. But, all you need do is remove the lawyer pin that will keep it from locking up and you would be correct.

Thanks for the reply. I do some machine work on custom auto stuff.
Never really worked on firearms. Is this a simple operation?
Do you know of any links or video available on it? Thanks

You can PULL the Pin out.
I have a MGM Barrel made for be about 6 Months ago.
Its a 16" 209-50.
Havent had any Big problems with it.
Just Scope mount screws Slightly long, The mount couldnt be moved by hand, But under Recoil it Did.
Sanding the End of them Fixed it.
